Re: Report a broadband notspot or slow-spot

A subject I have a great interest in as I'm a reluctant dial-up user! Thanks for posting the link which I hope others will use. I reported my 'notspot' after reading WU's recent news item.

"I'm a reluctant dial-up user!"

Is "Mobile Broadband" via the 3G mobile networks not an option? If available, it would be a dramatic improvement over dial-up.

Re: Report a broadband notspot or slow-spot

We'd already checked out that possibility. Unfortunately, 'Mobile Broadband' isn't likely to be of much use to us. This is partly due to the geography of our area - it's very hilly! We use Orange on our mobiles and the signal is variable. It goes from non-existent (unless you walk up the hill) to quite good. People round here tend to favour Orange as it has the best cover on the whole.
I did a check for our postcode on the Orange site an the only positive thing it said was 'Your phone or dongle will work well outdoors'! Apparently indoors it would probably have 'poor signal quality'. We'd already noticed that with the phone and the outdoor option isn't too good in Wales. It rains a lot here. We would have only 2G coverage, no 3G or 3G+.
Our dial-up connection is slow, but very reliable and stable with speeds of 44.0 or 45.2Kbps. Awful I know, but hopefully things will improve before too long.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: Report a broadband notspot or slow-spot

I used the link as well has I have a slow BB connection but having just dropped to option 1 they have cut the speed even more December 2008 I had the router connected at 424kbp/s and downloaded a programme from ipayer 900Mb in just over 4 hours. May 2009 I downloaded service pack 2 for vista 248Mb it took over 6 hours. Both downloads were started at around 6pm both were on a Saturday, I am of the opinion that BT are capping the speeds of people on option 1 or those who use video sites like youtube or the BBC iplayer because with my present speed I cannot listen to a radio broadcast and surf the net at the same time something I could do last December.

Have a read of this article - BT limiting broadband speeds at peak times

Sometimes dial-up, although slow, seems pleasantly uncomplicated! I just listen to radio broadcasts on my radio. I find some of BT's practices questionable to say the least.
