Following on from a previous thread regarding an analogue signal being sent to a DVI input on a tv, I need to upgrade my graphics card to one with a DVI output. A few questions I need answers to please. 1. What card do you recommend - bearing in mind I don't play games ever? 2. Where's the best place to buy it? 3. Is it easy to fit? 4. Are there any problems I will encounter after installation? |

We actually only really need to know what expansion slots you have available on your motherboard. If you open up the side of your PC you will see various slots on the board. Have a look at this picture and tell us if you have any spare traditional PCI, PCIeX1, PCIeX4 or PCIeX16 slots available. |

Last question - how much do you want to spend? You could, for example, get one of these for twenty three quid which would do the job and be perfectly adequate for normal use. On the other hand you could go for broke with one of these for a shade under five hundred notes! Will you be doing any on-line gaming or high resolution computer aided design on your PC? |

I use the pc for basic stuff such as downloading music and vid clips here and there, Global TV also. There's no gaming at all - not into that. My daughters use design software (Adobe Illustrater & Photoshop). I'm liking the first option you suggest if it will suffice. |

I think I might look for something slightly more powerful. I'm hoping Mouse will see this thread and offer some suggestions. |

For what you want from a graphics card Greysts suggestion, in my opinion, is ideal for you.

Yeah I think it's ideal, for basic useage, remember though that this is a real budget card, so don't try and push it if at all. If your daughter is just manipulating photos you're ok, anything more than that consider alternatives. A few points: Remeber that this card doesn't have it's own dedicated fan, so any assistance inside your tower will help this card, as it gets very hot, also any air flow you can have close to this card would go a long way to extending its life, but the heatsink is adequate by itself in almost all instances. Easy to overclock, low profile ready, fits nicely into a slim case, large heat sink, and it is double sided. Installation is easy, just plug in the card into the PCI-E slot, it's probably adviseable to download the drivers from nVidia's website prior to getting the card, unless you've got an nVidia card already. This card supports DX10, and it does come with the S-video cable, although a component cable or DVI cable will be much better, i.e. for viewing HD content. If this seems your way forward, then I'd go for it and at that price at Ebuyer, you really can't go wrong. |
