A fortnight ago, I bought a panasonic viera 23" tv.(freeview included) I'm more than pleased with the picture quality etc. As yet I haven't reconnected the vhs & video. I'm now wondering about one of those dvd with hard drive so that any recording/playing of dvd's can be done on that. What I am thinking about, is taking it one stage further and having a HD dvd recorder. BUT, I've just learned that although hd dvd films are limited and slightly more expensive, there are TWO formats, HD OR Blueray and they aren't compatible. Both will show normal dvd's, but not opposing formats. Like betamax and vhs, one had/has to go. Clearly betamax failed. So, who is more likely to succeed in this latest saga?. I understand Sky and Virgin transmit in HD, Telly's are promoted as being HD, so one might be excused for thinking folk will be brainwashed into thinking HD when it comes to buying recorders, or am I wrong. Either way, what comment do you have? |

The two formats BluRay and HDDVD, both can display High Def outputs. A TV being promoted as HD means that it will display a HD source that's played through it, be it BluRay or HDDVD, so don't get confused by it. To purchase a recorder for either BluRay or HDDVD would cost you the earth, even PLAYERS for these formats are still expensive, that's even before you consider the cost of the media to write to. LG have released a player that can read both formats BlueRay and HDDVD as well as being able to play back your regular DVD's. For the time being keep your money in your pocket and get a regular HDD Recorder (HDD = Hard Disc Drive), until the prices reduce for the above. PS for the record, Betamax only failed as it wasn't as cheap to produce as VHS was, however Betamax was the better, in terms of quality etc. |

Thanks for that.Don't know where I picked it up, but I was under the impression that NO player was able to read both formats. Surely they must be onto a winner whoever they are, (who are LG?). |
