Wifi problem

My Network
I have cable broadband thats feeds into a Linux PC acting as a firewall which then passes into a 16 port switch The IP range is 192.168.1.* and the IP addresses are assigned saticly. The network contains 4 PC and two laptops running, XP, Vista and Linux. I have a Belkin Wireless access point running from the switch, only the laptops connect via wireless (or at least try).

The Problem
My Daughter has a HP laptop which use's a Zyxel USB wireless adapter to connect to the internet without a problem (no internal wireless). The laptop is set to connect using the Zyxel software as opposed to using windows but it will connect using windows. It uses 64 bit wep and mac filtering.

Problem is no other wireless device can connect to the Internet via the Belkin (regardless of the daughter being connected or not), I have tried several other wireless device on my other laptop and PC's. The PC\Laptop says I am connected, the Belkin AP says I am connected but there is no traffic going through. I have set the AP to basic, no wep, no mac filtering, turned firewalls off, nothing just, just says I am connected but no traffic.

Today I purchased a new AP, Sitecom AP. As the daughter was out I set my laptop up on this AP, 5 minutes I was surfing the net, great I thought a duff Belkin AP.............WRONG. When daughter comes in I try to connect her laptop to the new AP, it says it is connected but nothing. Used both Zyxel and Windows connections but the result was the same, no traffic. I have confirmed the setting are the same, turned firewalls on and off tried various wep settings but no traffic.

So what do I try, I have checked that the windows connection on the daughters Laptop is set to AP but that made no difference, to be honest I am running out of ideas

Suggestions please??

Tim

P.S. For got to mention that the daughter DS and Wii connect ok

Re: Wifi problem

Can you connect more than one device at a time and get them working on the internet, apart from the laptop?

Re: Wifi problem

When I tried the daughter laptop I tried with my laptop using the wireless and switched off. I have not tried the DS or Wii yet

Re: Wifi problem

OK. The reason I ask is because you don't seem to have a router in this set up. A switch just acts as a means to allow more devices. You need a router to actually share your internet connection. You can connect this to the switch if you need more than the (usually) 4 ports on the router.

Re: Wifi problem

A router controls the connection, a network switch\hub share the feed across a network

I use Virgin media as my ISP and take the cable feed from my SET Top Box (which acts as a cable modem which I have no control over), this feeds into old PC fitted with two network cards which has IPCop installed and acts as my Firewall\Router. The firewalled feed comes out of the IPCop box into the 16 port switch which feeds my network. It has been like this for over 7 years and has worked perfectly well. I have only had wireless problem in the last 12 months since my old D-Link AP died and I purchased the Belkin AP.

Re: Wifi problem

I understand how a router works. Your original post only mentioned a firewall.

Have you started with the obvious, ie no security on the wireless connection, DHCP disabled?
