Setting Up Wireless Network

Hi, hope someone can help
I am attempting to set up a wireless network using a Netgear WGT624 router. The section that I am struggling with is during setup it asks for the IP address, IP subnet mask, gateway IP address, the primary and secondary DNS IP addresses. My ISP is virgin media and my network connection is set to obtain the IP info automatically. Now i can obtain the IP address and subnet mask address whilst connected without the router, however I have so far not been able to obtain the other info.

I am using Windows XP SP2 with a cable modem and a realtek network card

Could someone please help

Re: Setting Up Wireless Network

If you're using the setup wizard, it should identify the ip address etc itself, as it gets them from the service provider. You shouldn't need to type these in manually.

If it doesn't, turn off the modem and router for a couple of minutes. Then tuen on the modem, followed by the router a minute later. Then try again.

Re: Setting Up Wireless Network

Thanks for replying RichieP

I am using the setup wizard and have already tried what you have suggested but it still comes back to requesting the info to be entered manually.

I realise that I must be doing something wrong because I agree with what you have said but so far it has eluded me.

Cheers
Alex

Re: Setting Up Wireless Network

Is it saying you have a static ip address? I've seen this happen a couple of times, even though it's definitely a dynamic ip address. The only way I got round it was to keep trying, rebooting the modem each time.

Re: Setting Up Wireless Network

Thanks again RichieP

I think that I do have a static IP address, that is if it is the same every time I log on to the internet. (I could be wrong)

I must admit that I have had several goes at rebooting the modem and to be honest I am starting to relate to the animation in your signature.

Cheers

Re: Setting Up Wireless Network

You should only have a static ip address if you requested one and pay extra for it each month.

To find the settings to try manually, connect your modem to your PC and restart it.

Go to Start > Run, type cmd and press Enter.

In the command box, type ipconfig /all (note the space) and press enter.

You will get a list of DNS servers, ip address etc from there.

If that still doesn't work, you may need to call Virgin support line, though you may get nowhere as they claim not support wireless if it's not their product.

Re: Setting Up Wireless Network

It was the 5th or 6th reset and reboot of the router.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Cheers
Alex
