How to protect my wireless broadband ? PLEASE help me!

I have just got a wireless router. After reading instruction forward and backward it just started working. It is USRobotics 9110 model.

I bought this enabling my son to share my internet.

Now he gets the access without doing anything. That means any one in the vicinity can easily get into this broadband.

I have tried my best to protect before asking help here but failed.

I know genius techs are here to help me out as did in the past.

I am not an expert in computers therefore please give me step by step instruction if possible please.

This is the menu I get when I open the setup:
SYSTEM
WAN
LAN
WIRELESS
NAT
ROUTING
FIREWALL
SNMP
UPnP

and each one has several sub menus and numbers....just confusing.

Thank you in advance.

Re: How to protect my wireless broadband ? PLEASE help me!

it's all on page 30 of the user handbook

select Wireless> Security>WPA> under authentication select Pre Shared Key> then type in a pre shared key of your choice (between 8 and 63 characters) eg jaffer01 then> save settings

when you next try to connect to the network you will be asked to type in this key

job's a good 'un

Thank you for your reply, Mate.

Unfortunately this did not work before and I tried it again but without any success.

Any other suggestion, please?

Re: How to protect my wireless broadband ? PLEASE help me!

Just to check if it is unsecured, double click on the Wireless Icon on your sons machine.
Select 'View wireless networks' and you should get a window something like this:>>>> This

If there isn't a padlock with the wording 'Security-enabled wireless network' next to it, it has no protection.
However if it has your son knows the key. The System will remember this every time it is started and he won't have to input the key again.
This might give the impression of not needing a key in the first place.

It is not protected and NO Padlock either.

My son doesn't know the password.

Hi

In page 12 of your user manual (or at the link below), make sure security type is set to WPA. Yours is probably off.
