IE8 Protected Mode - is it on or off?

IE8 tells me at the bottom of the browser that Protected Mode is off, but when I double click it, all the 'Enable Protected Mode' boxes are ticked. This is the case every time I open IE8. Anyone know if I am protected?

Have you disabled the User Account Control (UAC) by any chance?

If you have, this action puts Internet Explorer into the Protective Mode OFF state and could leave you vulnerable to malicious code intrusion from sites which pray on users who have turned off UAC.

To overcome this, and still have the benefit of not having the nagging permission requests, download this tool -->> TweakUAC <<-- and use in Quiet Mode

There probably is a manual registry fix which does the same and obviously doesn't introduce a third party program to do it for you, but it's only 76kb in size.
