Agonizingly slow...Trojan Horses, Java/ByteVerify
|
Hi there.. I have AVG AntiVirus and after the scan it said I had Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic.SR and Trojan Horse Downloader.Mediket.D and Java/ByteVerify on my system. My computer is extremely slow and I can't do anything without it taking a very long time. I ran HijackThis and the log file is here attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
- Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
- Close any open browsers.
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

I tried downloading ComboFix and the prompt to open ComboFix.exe comes up, but it does not give me the option to open or save this file (the Save File tab in this prompt is blurred out. I don't know if there is something wrong with my settings or what.

now close all windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED
then :-
Download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free)
Once installed, update the program definitions when prompted.
Click the "Preferences" button and then the "Scanning Control" tab.
Under "Scanner Options" make sure the following are checked/selected:
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
Ignore System Restore/Volume Information on ME and XP.
Deselect all other scanning options.
Close SUPERAntiSpyware for use later.
Please reboot your computer and enter Safe Mode (tap the F8 key just before Windows starts to load, then select Safe Mode).
Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click the "Scan your computer" button.
On the left, select "C:\Fixed Drive".
On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose "Perform Complete Scan".
Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click "OK".
Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click "Next".
After quarantining anything found, you may be prompted to reboot, click "Yes".
Reboot back into Normal Mode...
Now Re-scan with HijackThis and post the new log and the SUPERAntiSpyware Log.

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
To flush out infected restore points.
Then restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point :-
click START\ALL PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS\SYSTEM RESTORE. click on "create new restore point"
click on NEXT and follow the prompts.
this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the infections reinstalled again.
Then :-
Download and scan with CCleaner
- CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build. - Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre. - Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose. - Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
- A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
- Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
- Click "exit" when done.
then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.
to help speed up your system.
then let us know how the computer is running.

I did all of the above...the computer is running a tad smoother, but it is still very slow. IE and Firefox hangs a lot and it is very slow still. What about the Trojan Horses and JavaByteVerify? Are they now gone? I don't have extensive knowledge of computers, but are the viruses or the causes gone from my computer...they were/are in the Virus Vault in my AVG...what does that mean exactly? Thanks for all the help so far by the way..I really appreciate it.

we removed a few files and it now looks clean, the files that are in the virus vault are safe, they can't do any damage from in there, but you can now delete them from the virus vault if you like.
what are the specs on this computer, RAM, processor etc.

It's an older computer, I'm just back using it for about a year or so. It's a Celeron processor, 467MHz, I just "upgraded" to 512 MB of RAM, Windows XP SP2. My computer didn't have SP2 so I downloaded it a short while ago and thats about the same time I was getting the slowdown. I also visited some not so friendly websites. My computer is not allowing me to go into standby or sleep mode...says the device driver is not allowing it. Before the installation of SP2 and visiting those dumb websites, the computer was fine.

it's a bit low on specs (467mhz), it should work ok but it will be a bit slow.
i take it that it only has a small hard drive 6-8 gb, do you have much free space on it ?
is it recognizing the new Ram ?, right click on MY COMPUTER, select PROPERTIES and see what specs it gives.

I did look at the Properties under My Computer(this is how I got the specs before) and it's 467 mhz, 512 MB ram. I have 18 GB of hard disk, of which there is 12GB of free space. When I'm online, the scroll bar will stick and it is not very smooth. Even when I click on the IE or Firefox icon, it takes about 1 minute for the browser to load. In Windows, when I click on Start, All Programs, the listing of programs takes quite a while for it to actually show up on the screen.

how long ago did it start running slow ?
did it happen all of a sudden, after you installed a program maybe.
try running sfc \scannow
to see if any system files are missing.
put your XP disc in the drive.
click on START\RUN and type CMD into the address bar and click OK.
At the DOS PROMPT type SFC /SCANNOW. note the space between SFC and /SCANNOW. hit enter.

It started running slow a few weeks ago after I installed SP2. Unfortunately I don't have the XP disc...when I bought this computer(used) it already had XP installed, but they provided no CD.

It could be a bad installation of SP2, it might be an idea to do a system restore to a time before you installed sp2, then reinstalling it.
before you reinstall it, disable all anti virus ,anti spyware programs so they don't interfere with th installation, and disconnect from the internet.
How to Start and Use System Restore
To start System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
The first time you use System Restore, there are two options on the Welcome page:
• Restore my computer to an earlier time
• Create a restore point
2. Click Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next.
A calendar appears.
3. In the calendar, choose which Restore Point to roll your system back to.(before your problems started)
4. Click Next.
You are prompted to close all applications before completing the Restore process because the computer will restart.
5. Upon completion of the restart, a confirmation screen appears. Click OK to continue using your computer.

I tried doing a system restore, but the furthest date back it's allowing me is only to a few days ago. It's saying I don't have any other restore points ( I want to go back to March)?!?

you're best bet then might be to uninstall SP2 and reinstall it.
you might be better posting in the XP help forum, some of the more techie members there might be able to help you better.
