Hard drive running in background, no applications open

Hi - would someone be able to spare a few minutes to check this Hijack Log for me?

I've already had one hard disk go on me (PC new in October 2007) and the new one seems to be running in the backgrpund (light is on) even though I've got no applications open; I'm starting to get a little concerned that something may have corrupted this one as well....

Many thanks for your time - much appreciated.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

Please download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware. from
here.
Install it and
update the program with the latest definitions.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:

  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the :Apply all actions button.
If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report.
So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you performed, select "Save report as" and save to your desktop.
The default file name will be in date/time format: Report-Scan-200706-1606.
A copy of each report will be saved in C:\Documents and Settings\<user profile>\Application Data\Grisoft\AVG Antispyware 7.5\Reports.
  • If you installed AVG AS over a previous version, reports are saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • If you are a Vista user, reports are saved in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Grisoft\AVG Antispyware 7.5\Reports\

Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and post the AVg log report and a new HijackThis log.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

you have some processes disabled in MSCONFIG.

click HERE to learn how to open MSCONFIG.

once you have it opened click on the 'Startup Tab' and make sure there is a checkmark beside each entry.
Also check the 'General Tab' has the "normal startup" option checked. REBOOT when asked to by Windows to complete the change.

Then post a fresh HJT log.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

Thanks for your continued help bricat.

Although all entries were ticked in msconfig, some of them had a date disabled against them. I think this must have happened when Dell helped me install the new disk and suggested I disable some of the startup programs to make startup quicker....

Upon reboot I now seem to have acquired an InstallShield Update Manager icon on my task bar - what is this?

I then reran a new HJT log, but I've just noticed it's got the same date and time as the original log I ran last night and doesn't look much different. I clicked on "Do a system scan and save a log" and it came up with the following error message:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack may not be able to fix them.

If that happens you need to edit the file yourself" and then goes on to tell you how to.

The message then finishes off:

"For Vista: simply, exit Hijackthis, right click on icon and choose 'Run as Adminstrator'.

Click OK from this error message and it seems to produce the original HJT log file, not a new one.

So...I've rerun HJT as admin, and here's the new log:

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

InstallShield Update Manager :-

This programs purpose is to keep the software up to date.
Basically it checks for new versions and is not necessary to always run in your system startup.

hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to bring up taskmanager.
in the processes section look down the CPU column and see what system idle is reading.
also have a look and see what is using the CPU

you can go back into MSCONFIG and untick the InstallShield Update Manager and any other that have been changed.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

Thanks for your continued help, bricat. Does the latest HJT log look OK to you?

Strangly The InstallShield Update Manager icon has now disappeared and I can't find it to untick in MSCONFIG - the nearest one to it is InstallDriver Table Manager(?)

You'll have to excuse my technical ignorance, but I can't find any reference to system idle under Processes in the Task Manager. Task Manager itself seems to taking the most CPU at the moment.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

the HJT log looks clean.

InstallDriver Table Manager

leave that one alone.

It should be the very bottom entry. but if taskmanager is using the most then i don't think there is a problem there.

Download and scan with CCleaner
  1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

  3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  7. Click "exit" when done.

then Vista Automatic Defrag:

1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Selct the Control Panel Home
4. Click System and Maintenance
5. Under the Administrative Tools section at the bottom, click Defragment your hard drive
6. You may need to grant permission to open the disk fragmenter
7. make sure" Run automatically" is ticked (recommended)
8. Click OK

This is probably what is running in the background, vista has an automatic defragmenter which is switched on by default.
you can disable it briefly to see if that is what is running in the background.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

Once again thanks for your continued help, bricat.

Have downloaded and run CCleaner successfully. The disk defragmenter is scheduled for once a week. Everything seems to be running OK now.

I guess I should update and run the AVG anti-spyware everyday now? Should it always be run in SAFE MODE?

Many thanks.

Re: Hard drive running in background, no applications open

you can run it in normal mode, but if it finds anything it can't remove, run it in safe mode.

Happy to help.
