Please clarify a forum rule

I read the forum rules/guidelines from time to time to refresh my memory and one of them isn't entirely clear to me:

7c) Links to computer/Internet related forums may be viewed as a conflict of interests, and as such removed.

I understand that it wouldn't be right to link to another similar forum, but what about individual programs/applications? if someone had a problem with a particular program/application and failed to get an answer here which resolved their problem, would it be wrong to give them a link to a forum specific to that program/application? I have done this in the past and would like clarification on this point please.

Re: Please clarify a forum rule

If you've done it in the past and 'got away with it', then I think you have the answer already.

Obviously, we're not in the business of preventing solution, but presenting solutions.

However, if a member were to persistently refer to another site we would clearly have to take a view.

Re: Please clarify a forum rule

Thank you for your reply. It's not a question of 'getting away with it', that implies some kind of wrongdoing on my part and on the part of a lot of other people who do the same thing.
I take your point about persistent referral to another forum, but I haven't been aware of that happening on the forums I visit here.

Re: Please clarify a forum rule

We spend a lot of time deleting posts from people who can't be bothered to read the rules of this forum or who think it's a good idea to champion a rival magazines forum. This forum is paid for by Web User. Why on earth should they allow free advertising to a rival? If anyone prefers to use a different forum to seek answers then they have a perfect right to do so but constant reference to that rival is not only discourteous to WU but downright annoying.

Re: Please clarify a forum rule

I couldn't agree more with what you say greysts. It would be quite wrong to promote in any way the forums of a rival publication, or similar forums even if they aren't related to any particular forum. That isn't what I was asking about. I was thinking that if someone had a problem with a specific program, e.g. AVG, Firefox or whatever, and failed to get a resolution to their problem here, would it be within the rules to post a link to the specific forums for that program. I've seen people doing this and I've done it myself without realising that I might be contravening a forum rule. Obviously it's preferable either to know or be able to find the solution to a question, but it's not always possible unfortunately.

Re: Please clarify a forum rule

I don't see any problem with linking to the likes of , adaware forum, comodo forum, zonealarm forum. i've done it myself in the past.
as long as the forum is for a specific program, where better to ask for help.

Thank you bricat. You've given me a straightforward answer to what I thought was a straightforward question.
