Missing emails in Outlook (not Express)

Hi everyone,
I was sick of hitting my storage limit in Hotmail, so I decided to start using MS Outlook (not Express) instead... the 2003 version lets you check web-based mail. I typed in all my Hotmail account information and successfully downloaded the emails, then shut down my computer. The next day when I turned my computer on, the link to Outlook in my quick start menu was gone (I have XP), so I had to go into All Programs --> etc. to open up Outlook... and when I did, all the emails I had downloaded were gone! Instead, I just had one new email that said "Welcome to Outlook." Huh??
I've done all the suggested things like finding my .PST files and repairing them, but to no avail. I don't understand how all these emails I downloaded could just disappear like that! Is it possible they are still lurking on my computer somewhere? I'm not a computer expert so any help you guys can offer would be very greatly appreciated!

Are all the messages gone or is it just the Hotmail? Can't you access your Hotmail Inbox and see if they are there? I have Outlook 2000 and I can access my Hotmail account but it does not have the ability to download the messages to the hard drive. Is this a new feature similar to Outlook Express?

Actually, just the Hotmail emails were gone. I thought that by downloading those emails into Outlook they would then be on my hard drive, so I deleted all my emails in the webmail version -- and this made them disappear from Outlook too! (I fiddled around with this last night to confirm). So this seems like a pretty pointless service... Outlook basically lets you read your webmail on your computer, but it's not actually downloading anything... so my storage limit problems remain unchanged! I guess I need to start using a non web-based email address.

I was actually reading a story this morning about a lady in the states who had all her business and personal stuff going back years wiped from Hotmail. There's no legal redress in such circumstances as no responsibility is accepted. Its best to keep your personal stuff locally and make sure it is well backed up.
