Having just read Mark Wilson's somewhat glowing report of Thunderbird 2, I would be interested to know if anyone is using it and if they have had problems with it. I tried it when version 2 was first released and had several problems with it of which the most serious were that incoming messages appeared to be superimposed on each other and the other was that although I ticked the "Leave messages on server" option I found that suddenly one day all the messages in all the accounts on two different servers - I have two ISPs one in the UK and the other in France - had been deleted. I was able to sort out the "superimposition" of messages but could not find out what to do about having messages deleted that I wanted to keep, so I uninstalled it. Since then I have read that losing messages is not an uncommon occurrence; one ex-Thunderbird user found that some 500 messages had been irretrievably deleted and as he was a computer engineer and the messages were from his customers this caused him no end of problems. Other Thunderbird users have, apparently, had similar problems. Now that Thunderbird is Version 2.0.0.12 I am wondering if this problem has been sorted out and if it is worth giving it another try |

Hi Chris I've been using Thunderbird for the last 18 months and never had a problem with it. I've got 5 separate accounts (3 POP3, 1 Google and one Web based) plus 5 different SMTP servers set up in the system. Although I get very little spam (the Virgin Media servers kill 99% of it) the junk filter in Thunderbird gets the rest. It's got it's own spell checker and the whole interface is customisable to suit your taste. One thing I would say is don't simply import everything from your current email client. That way you are in danger of carrying existing errors from one to the other. Clearly if your address book is enormous this will cause problems so you might want to think about export your address book to a CSV file, checking it and then importing it to Thunderbird. Treat some of the wild accusations with caution. Thunderbird doesn't delete emails unless you tell it to. It doesn't surprise me one bit that a 'computer engineer' had this problem. They are far to fond of fiddling with things, particularly in the registry and he most likely did it himself. I think Mark's review was fully justified. |

His review probably was justified. I would have said the same for the first few weeks that I used it. However, once I had set it up with the option to leave all mail on the server, I did not go to the setup menu again so I don't understand why I lost all the mail from the servers. No one else in the household used it and no one tinkered with it. I came across a web site where people were discussing their problems with Thunderbird 2 and there were several who suffered mysterious losses of their mail. They weren't all "computer engineers" either! I still think that what Calypso developed into (Courier) was the best but it appears that the developers have given up on it, and may abandon it. |

Hi Rikiyome, I don't know what the answer, if any, might be. Your experience and mine appear to be fairly common happenings with Thunderbird. I found a web site full of stories like ours, but can't remember its address I got over the problem by removing it from my machine and just using the portable version on a flash drive for when I haven'y got access to my own machine. I have been trying something called "Evolution" which was originally written for Linux but which has been converted to run on Windows. It seems pretty good and is similar to Outlook in that it has a calendar, diary etc. |
