Windows Live and attachments
|
|
Just started using Windows Mail and I am having trouble opening an attachment. Clicking on the message it opens in Wordpad and is just rubbish. What am I doing wrong?

Nancy, if you go start>control panel>folder options>file types and when that opens up scroll down the list of file extensions it has opened until you get to .doc and change the default opening prog ( which looks as if it is set at Wordpad ), and use the "change" button to alter that to whatever prog is your choice.
As another idea, what happens if you download the attachment to your desktop before trying to open it ?

Hi! Followed your suggestion and downloaded the file to my desktop and was able to open it without any trouble. However, I did try Control Panel, then selected folder options, but the only tabs showing are General/View/Search, though I searched these, there's nothing about file extensions. I am using Vista.

Sorry, I know nothing of Vista, will have to wait for someone else to help on that front.

You mention two different things; in your description you say Windows Live (Windows Live Mail is the Hotmail replacement) and in the body of your question you say Windows Mail (Vista's successor to Outlook Express) which is why you confused Bungler.
To associate a file extension to a program in Vista, go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type, scroll down to .doc and select the program you want to use, e.g. Word.
If you don’t have Word, you can get the Word viewer here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en Also at the bottom of that screen are links to the viewers for Excel and PowerPoint, should you want them.
