Good evening, Last week I set up a wireless internet connection for my grandparents with the broadband supplier being sky. Since then they have not been able to send or receive emails via outlook express. Their email provider is gmail and I set it so that they could send and receive via outlook express. Everything was fine when they connected via dialup, and they had no problems until they started to use the wireless broadband. They get an error box when the press send / receive. "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems or a long period of inactivity. Account 'xxxx@googlemail.co.uk" server 127.0.0.1 protocol: POP3, Port:110 secure (SSL)..." The only variables are the wireless broadband and mcafee security that came free with the broadband. They are running windows xp with all the updates being up to date so to speak. Any suggestions and advice are very much appreciated. |

That IP address (127.0.0.1) suggests that the emails are being routed via the local machine which is normally an indication that they are being diverted via your anti-virus software. Google Mail uses different parameters in OE from a normal email service, in particular the POP and SMTP servers use different ports. You may have to make some changes in McAfee to allow Google Mail to work. |

Thank you for that. I don't suppose you know roughly what settings to look at. |

Unfortunately I know nothing about McAfee but have you checked the Google Mail settings by referring to the Google Help Page here? It also has a Troubleshooter here which might help. |

Thank you for that, I am going to see them this weekend so I can have a look and see what the problem is. I will report back what I find and that I have fixed it (hopefully)

I used the gmail diagnostic download and it told me where the problem was, which is great. I fixed the problem which was with the outgoing mail smtp and the pop3. When I restarted the computer the things I had changed for the good changed back and so it didn't work again. I changed them back and said "apply" and "ok" but the same thing happened when I turned off the computer. The incoming POP3 setting under "properties" and then "advanced" should be 995, but when I restart the computer it resets to 110 each time. Under "properties" and "servers" Incoming pop3 should be pop.googlemail.com but it resets to 127.0.01. Why does it do this? Any thoughts very much appreciated. |

I would guess McAfee is the culprit. Have a look at the McAfee setup to see what it's doing about scanning emails. Whatever it is, stop it! Better still get rid of McAfee completely and use something less intrusive. |
