port (socket error)

Hi

Can anyone help me here please??

Outlook Express has been working fine since installed but I have now started getting the following error message;

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'xxxW', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Googled this and followed all the guidelines ref turning off anti-virus/ firewalls etc.

No joy so I contacted my ISP (BT Yahoo)..They ran their pcshare diagnostics and tell me that it is a port error and I need the pc vendor to repair it!!

I don't know why but this doesn't seem right, I can get web based mail so feel that the problem lies either with my ISP or with OE itself and not the PC.

Any views/ideas would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Kevin

Re: port (socket error)

This usually fixes it but I have my doubts if BT Yahoo has other ideas :

OE > Tools > Accs > Mail > Properties > Advanced > change ‘Incoming port to 110’ and/or remove the tick from Secure SSL connection.

Re: port (socket error)

Only the obvious ones :

Correct server's address
Do not use area code dialling
Check REN values if equipment has been added
Call waiting

Re: port (socket error)

well it seems it was REN, disconnected recently connected work broadband, rebooted and hey presto mails came through.

and boy did they come through, 1500 of them going back 6 months that I had previously read and deleted through OE. I had only been without OE for a few days so why has it received all of these old, previously deleted, emails?

Thanks for the tips above anyway!!

Re: port (socket error)

a quick update on this, the emails finally stopped at 2476!! Most of them were triplicate versions of previously read and deleted emails and new emails are now coming in duplicated

Any further advice would be welcome

Thanks
