Hi Can anyone help me with Cute FTP? I use it to upload my web site and somehow managed to configure it for that with instructions from my hosting company. But someone told me I can also use it to send large files such as digital photos to my sister in OZ. I don't know where to start setting up another ftp in it. What information would I need from my sister and where would she get it from? Please remember you are explaining this to an idiot! I can follow basic instructions but I have no background knowledge. Thanks, in anticipation Write Occasions If you search for that you will probably find it All that you touch and all that you see, is all that your life will ever be |

You do not need to set another another FTP. Simply put it all to your web site. You will need to compress the pictures as far as possible, convert to GIFs or JPGs first. When you got it all up simply give that section a URL that is not listed elsewhere, send an e-mail to your sister telling here what it is, and thats it! |

No, no, no. FTP. File Transfer Protocol. He wants to transfer files. The clue is in the name! One of you will need to be running an FTP server. Do a search on Google for "FTP Daemon" or "FTP Server", there are lots of shareware packages around. You will also need a static IP address, or some other means of naming the server. Check out www.no-ip.com if you don't have a static IP address. It is pretty straight forward stuff, but make sure you turn off your FTP server when you're done, as they can be very insecure! |

You are obviously not familiar with Cute FTP, but my advice to the user stands. I cannot imagine why you suggest a Google search, he has already got one of the best File Transfer Protocol programmes in the business. The advice I suggested stands. And it works. |

Cute FTP is a "client", whereas this chap clearly requires an FTP server. Suggesting that he compresses his files instantly renders your suggestion useless. |

Slapmatt, I have never joined a forum and found anybody as rude as you are. The system I recommended is simple, it is in use by many thousands of people, you all you can say is "No No No" and it is "virtually useless". The original question was asked by a person who admitted he was computer illiterate, but he has his web site up and running, and of course I reccommend that he compress his files, how much band width has he? The system will work and you have done him a disservice by intervening, particularly by talking in computerese. I supppose you would recommend that he send .bmps to OZ? juby |

The guy asked for information on setting up an FTP server - and that's what I gave him. Setting up an FTP server is one of the easier network/administrator tasks that you can do at home, there's lots of info about it online, it's pretty difficult to make a real mess of it and you'll learn alot doing it. Yes, I would recommend he sent .bmps to OZ, or .tiffs, .psds or any other file format he fancies. Given that I used to work for one of the largest Web design agencies in the UK and we regularly used FTP to send large, uncompressed files to clients, I'd say it's worth a try. |
