Need help pls

HI i woudl like to know how i would go about building a chat site the one like lycos chat has but i dont know where to start dont know if anybody knows lycos chat is a site u regoster to get a user name then once registred when u log in you have two pages on is your logbook and the other is the main chatroom with vatious rooms u can go too

Too be honest i don't know alot about programming languages but i would like to set a chat room up im going back to college to do web design, im basically in the planning the chat room out as its going to take a lot of hard work but i love a challenge
