Cant access some sites

I cant access some websites that I could yesterday . they just come up "website not available" as if it is offline .I cant even get through the password stage on MSN Messenger , it says the system is down . Or I can get on a site and click a link but then that page becomes unavailable . What I have noticed is that the sites I cant get on require some sort of password verication .

Re: Cant access some sites

Hi Colin, I've suffered a similar problem a couple of times and found that I'd somehow managed to click something on ZoneAlarm that caused the problem. I got things back to normal by resetting it to it's defaults (and on one occassion by uninstalling and then re-installing it). This might not be the answer but, if you stick around I'm sure someone will come to your assistance. Regards, Steve.

Re: Cant access some sites

Hi Colin
I am experiencing the same problems this weekend. Unable to sign in to MSN messenger and can't access my on-line HSBC Bank Account, or my Paypal bank account. Each time I try I get the message 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed'. Please help someone, I really need to get into these sites. Thanks,

Re: Cant access some sites

Try holding down you control key as you try to access those sites you mention. If you then find you can access them, you must have a popup stopper which is preventing the sites loading fully.

Thanks for your post Byron. Afraid it didn't work for me. I wondered if I tried System Restore back a few days it would allow me access. I accessed all these sites into the middle of this week, now I can't get in.

Re: Cant access some sites

The normal question to ask in the circumstances you describe is 'What's different on my PC between yesterday and today?' Have you installed any new software or hardware? Have you downloaded anything off the net? Have you changed anything that might have security implications such as the settings in ZoneAlarm or Norton or the IE Zone? If nothings changed have a look at your ISP's web site to see if they have been having server problems. Come back to us if anything strikes you.

Re: Cant access some sites

Yes, I have recently downloaded AVG anti-virus scan and run it a couple of times, also downloaded RAM IDLE PRO but wasn't happy with it so I removed it. I have emailed NTLworld, my broadband ISP telling of my problems but no reply as yet. I have Zone Alarm but haven't changed any settings.

Re: Cant access some sites

I think the time has come to get the Guru involved. We need to see what is being loaded at startup to see if there is anything that could be causing your problem. In particular it would be useful to see if Ram Idle Pro has left anything behind.
Perhaps Puta could post his instructions on running Hijack This.

Re: Cant access some sites

Go to this site, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it
Come back to web user, Right Click and paste its contents here

Also unable sign in to MSN messenger or hotmail. This is really doing my head in.

Gradually working my way down the list of 'things to try'. I am now looking at User Profiles and find there are 3. As I am the only person ever to be registered with this PC I can't understand why. The top user says Account Unknown--0.97mb local-local 26.. the second on the list is me, and the third is me again/guest. Should I delete any of these spare ones?

I tried system restore but after 3 different attemps it said it was unable to complete the task.

Ok, now is possibly the time to delete your user profile

Log on as Administrator or as a user with administrator rights.
On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System, and then click the User Profiles tab.
Under Profiles stored on this computer, click the profile that you want to delete, and then click Delete.
Log off.
Log on as the user account whose profile you deleted in Under Profiles stored on this computer, and then reconfigure your desktop environment with the settings that you want.

Re: Cant access some sites

What area do you live? Possibly someone can pop around and fix things. I will if you aren't too far away. DON'T publish your address here, just indicate what area. Then some kind soul might offer and you can give them the full address by email.

Re: Cant access some sites

thanks guru, I have printed it off and will try it tomorrow, too tired now. I don't suppose my extended gaurantee would cover this??? nope, thought not.
BTW method two gives a red warning that a newer version of IE is detected on this system and Setup cannot continue.....one problem after another

Hi guru,
Sorry was too nervous to try the Windows repair, decided to let an expert do it for me. Thanks for all your help.
