Homepage disappears

Hi there, I have strange problem that i've never come across before. My internet homepage has started to disappear when I start up IE. When I go into the internet options menu it has gone so I enter "www.google.co.uk" into the box again and click apply. When I shut down and reopen IE again it works ok and it can stay like this for 24 hours or so then suddenly i will open IE and I will get the "page cannot be displayed" or "syntax error" messages and again the homepage will have gone from the internet options menu. What can be causing this?
I am running Windows Xp Prof on a laptop with IE 6 SP 2. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

gill79 , might be a good time to update to IE7.
IE6 is old hat and less secure than the latest version.

Sorry I tried IE7 and hated it so i reverted back to the previous version. I thought it might be a virus causing the disappearing act? what do u think?

Of course that's your choice , but would it not be better getting used to it now rather than in the future .At some stage it will no longer be supported and you will be left with no option but to upgrade.

Have you run any scans ??
A syntax error is relayed to the URL. Rather than entering the URL yourself try this.
In IE go into the Internet options and click the "use blank" button > apply > OK. Restart IE and type Google into your address bar and hit enter. When your Google page opens go to your Internet options and hit the "use current" button > apply > OK.
Let us know if you.ve scanned for viruses , and with what program/s

Well i scanned my hard drive with AVG and it found 13 threats! Trojan Horse VB.BXT and Worm/Agobot.GEV. I have deleted them so hopefully the problem will not come back. I'm off to restart the machine anyway and see if it stops deleting my homepage. I will let you know.

You need to remove everything AVG finds , reboot your pc , and scan again. Many viruses are coded to reinstall at start up.
Have to say the two that you have mentioned are linked to peer to peer networks. If you are file sharing you're putting yourself at great risk from further infection.
