Firefox "options"

Hi. A thing that has recently just started happening to my Firefox browser is when you click the tools option at the top of the screen is doesn't show it. Also whenever Firefox opens it tells me it is installing updates and comes up with an error saying that it can't carry on with the updates - "close all applications and make sure you have sufficient privileges to update" (or something of the like).
Any ideas? Help much appreciated. Thanks.
