Hope you can help. Have Windows ME. Old but still works OK. I have now got sky broadband and it works great for my laptop. However I wanted also to use it for my desktop which has Windows ME. However I cannot get the installation disc to work. It keeps getting jammed half way through. Sky material says you must have 2000 which I thought would mean ME was OK. As ME came out after 2000 I thought that the minimum spec for broadband would be met. E-mailes Sky who said they thought ME was primarily for dial up but to seek help from Microsoft. However I used to have Onetel broadband on my ME so clearly it does work. Sky also suggested there is probably a way of to configure my desktop to allow for their broadband but they didn't know how to advise me. As MS no longer advise on ME (they withdrew this in 2006) wondered if anyone here could help me? Thanks very much for anything you can help with. |

If an installation CD-ROM from the Windows 2000 family is inserted, the user is prompted to "upgrade" to Windows 2000 with the reason that Windows Me is an older version. While this is not technically so (Windows Me was released several months after Windows 2000), Windows Me is in fact derived from the older, monolithic MS-DOS codebase (Windows 4.x) while Windows 2000 is the first of the NT 5 family, thereby constituting the latter as an upgrade. In short Sky's installation software will not work under WinMe. It looks like you will need to upgrade your OS, not only will that help install your internet, but also get rid of the worst MS-OS of all time. |

OMG!! Is ME that bad. Hadn't appreciated that and when it worked with last broadband company thought it was Ok to handle it Thanks very much for the advice. Now can I ask a bit more - what kind of price can I expect to pay for 2000, should I go "higher" for XP or even Vista and if I stick at 2000 are the eBay sellers generally OK or should I stay clear. Thanks again |

Depends on your systems specification, don't want to recommend an OS and your PC not handle the installation, can you post this information here please? Oh and I'd steer clear of eBay for software, you will never know for sure if it is legitimate. |

What are you using to connect? Is it the Netgear router provided by Sy or a USB modem? |

Simple - UPGRADE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM! - I cannot say how highly I would recommend NOT using Windows ME on the Internet especially if you are going on to any site that requests information from you etc. Forget all the other advice - UPGRADE! |

And don't waste £85 (ish) on purchasing Win XP - just buy a new computer! |

Fine advice if you happen to 4 or 5 hundred quid lying about, not a lot of use if you haven't! |
