Broadband Exchange Problem

I have just moved house to the next street along have found that my broadband speed capability has dropped from 1.5mb to a grim 512kbps. Both houses are connected to the same exchange and are a stones throw apart.

BT (Indian call centre) say that my house is only capable of receiving 512kbps yet surely this is wrong if I could get 3 times that amount over the road ? I try my telephone number in BTs web site and it confirms the 512kbps.

I am stuck between two Indian call centers (ISP and BT) and cannot get to talk to someone who really knows what's what.

Can anyone advise where I go from here ?

Many thanks for your help.

Re: Broadband Exchange Problem

There could be any number of reasons why that is the case. The routing of BT cables from a house to the exchange is dependent on how the phone is connected to the overhead or underground cables. Just because two houses are close to each other it doesn't mean that the wires take the same route to the exchange. If the BT site says that's what you'll get then there is very little you can do about it (apart from moving house of course!).

Re: Broadband Exchange Problem

apparently the average speed on BTBB is over 3gb/s. I only get 1.6gb, not enough to get the btvision box! The sluggish speeds some people are stuck with are shameful, as a nation we have one of the lowest BB speeds. a pressure group should be formed to force bt to upgrade all lines and exchanges,so everyone gets at least 2gb/s.

I'm off to facebook now to make a group!

Re: Broadband Exchange Problem

Hi poolfan exactly the same for me in my Village, I didn't move house though.

I tried a number of times to make some sense out of the Indian call centre but hey even the BT Engineers themselves can't understand them.

I'm on such a slow speed 512kbps too where as a friend two doors down in the cul d sac is on 1mb which is the maximum for our Village.

I don't see any speed improvement for sometime coming whilst using these old BT lines.
