Hi, I am a win98, IE6 user and have Orange BB (Speedtouch 330 modem). I have had regular connection problems but now have an even odder - I think - problem. Can anyone help? When connected via BB I can only view very few websites. Examples are orange.co.uk/helpandsupport (but not ornage.co.uk!), google, googlemail (and tesco, superdrug etc). But anything more complex like hotmail, facebook, and after playing around diy.com and so on come up with errors. The error is that "the page cannot be displayed / DNS error".. When using dial-up I have no problems. My connections seem to be ok. Scripting enabled. Ping test successful. (Have tried via IE and firefox). Java installed.... Sorry to quote all this but you wouldn't believe how many times they have asked me to install/reinstall and reset things. So far they haven't been able to come up with anything. Does anyone know what this could be? If it helps at all, I have only been able to notice that msot of the sites I cannot view have aspx/php/jsp page extentions/redirects/functionality within the page.... Would be great if anyone know what is causing this. Many Thanks!!! |

Read this thread I think they also have issues with their DNS Servers, but try lowering your MTU setting to 1492 using DrTCP from here. |

RichieP Thank you soooo much. It worked. Actually I downloaded the stuff last night and hadn't had a chance to check, and Orange called this morning. After a long time troubleshooting (again!) on the phone (and confirming a line test which came out fine) they put it down to an error with win98 which they couldn't find. In fact all they could recommend was getting a package of lower speed (and I'm on a 2mg speed only as it is)!! So, I tried your solution and it worked. So relieved I can FINALLY it. Thanks again!!!

I'm having exactly the same problem. Both my PCs are affected and I have never had any problems with my belkin wireless router (G+). It is really annoying, does anybody have a number I can try at Orange. I tried canging my MTU from 1432 to 1492 but has done nothing. Any help appreciated. Paul |

First thing to try is a different router if you can get hold of one. If that doesn't help then at least you can pinpoint it as likely to be Orange. |

I have had the same problem with AOL. Well it isn't AOL anymore ( changed over to the carphonewarehouse network the other week ) but still trades under the name of AOL. The answer was dropping the MTU from 1492 to 1400. This solved the problem of pages like hotmail and barclays not showing when others ( google and ebay ) worked fine. Maybe if you are having this seemingly randomly stopped web page problem it might be worth looking into the MTU solution but make sure you note what it was set at originally as this makes changes to the router ( hence both laptop and computer having the problem when fed through one router ) either directly or from the PC/laptop on login.
