Shared Internet connections

I have recently moved from dial up connection to Broadband,and am having problems staying on line.I have upto 8Mb,but it appears to show,when I am on line about 1Mbps. Could anyone advise what could be the problem ?.
It also appears that I have a "shared connection with another computer,but I have only one,could this also have a bearing,if so how do I change it.

Have you got a firewall running on your computer?

Just becuase you have 8meg doesn't necessarily mean you will be getting 8meg. There has been a lot of recent press regarding customers not getting the speed they are paying for from their ISP.
Contact your provider and ask them to investigate
