Cable broadband question - wireless router speeds

Hi there,

I have recently had 1Mb NTL broadband installed and would like to buy a wireless router so that I can work around the house instead of being tied up with wires all the time.

Can anyone tell me what speed router I should go for? I've seen speeds of 58Mbps, 108Mbps and 125Mbps and I'm a bit confused. I'll be using a Dell Inspiron laptop with 512Mb ram with a built in wireless card.

Any advice would be most appreciated..as would suggestions as to what router to buy.

Many thanks

Neil

Re: Cable broadband question - wireless router speeds

Neil

I would recomend the D-Link G604T router which has a speed of 54Mbps. I have found using my own laptop in an around the house and outside, that it is an excellent bit of kit, and used by lots of my friends who are it technicians.

the cheapest that ihave found it is Misco and the price is £62.26 inc Vat

Follow this link http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~45951~WW~/index.htm

you may need to buy a larger arial than is supplied depending on distance required and wall thickness.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick response. Should I worry about the speeds or is 54Mbps enough?

Just for surfing the net and just general use i would say 54mbps is fine,i have used it for a couple of years and have had no problems with it.

Re: Cable broadband question - wireless router speeds

The data transfer through the 54Mbps will still be 50 times your BB connection speed. A cheaper (although not by much) 11Mbps router will still be 10 times(ish) faster. The time that the router speeds comes into it is for data transfer over a network between PCs. The LAN cards operate at 100Mbps so with an 11Mbps router it would be noticable.
