RHR - General PC (54)

I have over 1000 fonts on my system, how can I reduce them so that Printshop will work again as it says it will only work if there is less than 300 fonts on the system. I have tried deleting some of them but then some programs will not work. Has anybody any ideas of how I can solve this problem, my fonts have increased by installing free programs then uninstalling leaving the fonts behind. Many thanks to anybody who can solve this problem.

This may be a bit late for you Barry, but if you are worried about the consequences of deleting fonts, create another folder (say Redundant Fonts) and COPY the fonts you don't want to that folder before you delete them. That way, they shouldn't load on startup, but if you find any problems, you can always copy them back, or install them as new fonts.

Wow! Way too many fonts. Fonts affect Windows startup Since Windows keeps all of the fonts in the Registry, the more fonts you have, the more adversely it affects the speed of your Windows startup. It's not just Print Shop that wants to get rid of them!!! Before going crazy and start deleting every font, there are a few fonts that you cannot delete. They are system fonts, and Windows uses them. To find out which fonts are your system fonts, you need to know which version of Windows you are running. Right Click on My Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties. The General tab should be open (if not, click on it). Write down your version of Windows what is noted under "System." You want the information listed under Modified. Windows 95 (retail), build 4.00.950: 7/11/95 Windows 95 (retail) Service Pack 1, build 4.00.950A: 7/11/95 Windows 95 OEM Service Release 1, build 4.00.950A: 7/11/95 Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2, build 4.00.1111 (4.00.950B): 8/24/96 Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.1, build 4.03.1212-1214 (4.00.950B): 8/24/96 - 8/27/97 Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.5, build 4.03.1214 (4.00.950C): 8/24/96 - 11/18/97 Windows 98, build 4.10.1998: 5/11/98 Windows 98 Second Edition, build 4.10.2222A: 4/23/99 Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Fonts. Now click View and then Details, which should list the fonts alphabetically and date modified Any font that has the same date as your system date is a system font. Do not delete this font. Click the icon for the font you want to delete. On the File menu, click Delete. To select more than one font to delete, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each of the fonts you want to delete.

Many thanks for the info Iain. I am running windows98SE version 4.10.2222 I understand the system fonts the thing I do not know is which ones I should delete, is it just trial and error and if something does not work then the font must be put back that is my main question. Instead of seleting them could they be put in a folder somewhere. I also have a message that comes up in Microsoft Works saying that there are more than 500 fonts on the system and should be reduced, but how. It seems if you run a lot of programs you have a lot of fonts, but how do I reduce them. Please Help

Open the fonts folder, Go to View, Click Details. You should now see Four columns, Font name, file name, size and modified. If the date modified isn't 4/23/99 it can be deleted safely.

Gary Have you eliminated the possibility of a virus? If not, then run an AV scan immediately. In the event of you being struck by a virus, and you're not able to rid your system of it, then report back for further instructions as the SubSeven Trojan is typical for removing file assocations, but there are kits availabe as freeware for rectifying their damage. If you're satisfied, there's no virus/trojan, then you might want to check whether it's a certain file type that's converted to zip. If this is the case, then this is easily resolved, as you can go to start, settings, folder options, file types and ensure that your files are associated with the correct program.

Hey dudes, I'm back again. more problems- I recently installed Zone alarm, a "personal firewall". I thought this was great, as a lot of the people at school have started to mess about and hack into each other's computers (you only need to know their IP address, apparently). Anyway, all this brought was horror, as I realised that hardly any programs would work that connect to the internet (e.g. IM's). I uninstalled it, but then the internet wouldn't work at all, so i reinstalled it just a few hours ago. But then, I realised while I can connect, no-one would send a reply to any of my messages in yahoo messenger, msn messenger or AIM (I.E. any of them). I uninstalled it, and now I want to try to get them working again. Also, whenever I shut down windows (98), it won't shut down when i click on it, instead restarting (NOT resetting, simply starting as though I'd clicked on restart rather then shut down). Help, anyone? And just thanks to that person that replied to me about the bmp image (the ff7.bmp.exe or whatever). I had downloaded anti virus software, and since had no problems (the viruses were I-worm and loveletter). You can download a FREE copy (lets you do everything as in the registered version) @ http://www.grisoft.com

Gary Obviously you weren't giving your IM's the access they required to bypass Zone Alarm. Did you completely eradicate the worm and virus? If not, then I'd do so immediately. As far as your shutdown problem, go to MS Download Center and intially download the Win98 shutdown supplement. If this doesn't work, then we'd need to go through a process of elimination for what is causing it.

The other thing that I was informed about (by Dixons sales satff!) was that all firewire cards inside DV camcorders run bothways - they only have to be enabled - must admit I'm a bit sceptical about this one!Altho' I regard myself as fairly PC literate you can see from this that I know sod all about this particular subject!! Just out of interest: Further to my previous entry relating to the proposed install of Ad-Aware 5.00.I installed this and on the initial complete scan, it dug out no less than 89 'Spy' cookies, which have obviously been building up and having a field day for the last two years.Needless to say, everyone of them has now been safely removed, and everything is still working fine with no problems. Ad-Aware and Zone Alarm work fine side by side, which is great. In Web User issue 20 page 75, the 'Best Tip' is brilliant. I created a shortcut to this site (www.geektools.com/cgi-bin/proxy.cgi)on my desktop and when the next Zone Alarm window appeared informing me that some had tried to get into my computer I clicked on the shortcut, and with the two windows side by side, typed in the site number of the hacker and within seconds had a page and a half of every single detail about him, amongst which was his full address, phone no. and email address. Everything almost with the exception of his birthmarks. He was in Shanghai no less. So, if like me you have a 'need to know' mentality, have a look at 'Geektools'. Terry Pell.

Then I allowed my Atomic Clock program to send/receive in ZoneAlarm, asked it for a time ping update, then after that all was OK. It saves now. I assume that the Atomic Clock synch is somewhere between my system clock and my date /time settings. Hope this helps somebody else. Regards, Ron, London.

It sounds like you are planning a format. If this is the case , then you WILL lose everything on the hard drive. If you have the facilities to make a back up, such as a cd writer, use it. However, if you insert your windows cd into the cddrive and run set up, it will simply overwrite all your existing files and folders. If you have done any updates since you got the PC, you will probably be told that a newer version of a file is already installed, do you wish to replace, click yes to all. The one thing I should suggest is that you remove all your drivers and replace them as Windows re-installs

The best thing to do would be to download all the necessary drivers fom the net( Store them in a Drivers file) and then save to your cd-r. That's assuming you have lost all your driver discs. If you download a program called advisor from http://www.belarc.com and install it, the program will tell you all the keys to all the programs that require them on your computer (and lot more besides)

Have you checked your pc for virus? If not, then I'd run a virus scanner to eliminate this. You can start windows with a bootlog to see if you can find the hardware that's failing boot, or what else is causing your boot failure. To do this, start your pc & whilst booting press F8 and choose 2. Bootlog, then windows will continue to load normally. Once loaded, a file called bootlog.txt will be in the root of your hard drive. This is by default hidden, so you'll need to ensure "show all files" is enabled in folder options. There is a small utility to help you read this file, it's called Boot Log Analyzer and is freeware, that can be downloaded from http://www.surecool.com You might also want to check what programs you have running at start up. To do this, go to start, run and type msconfig then press ok. Go across to the start up tab and uncheck any programs that aren't needed to run at start up. Whilst in the Configuration Utility, it might also be worth checking the autoexec.bat and config.sys to see if a program has written to one of the files, that's causing the start up error. If you need any help with the results then post back.

If you go to the Downloads section of Cnet.com you can download and install a program called 'Trojan Remover'.Its very good for clearing your system of all files associated with Badtrans.

If you have an anti virus installed you can go to the website and get an update. Or what I sometimes do if I have a virus is try a search engine like Google.com and ask for a (virus name) removal tool. Hope this helps you.

Most BIOSes have a built in “back door” password. If your PC has an Award BIOS, try the following passwords, AWARD SW, AWARD_SW, Award SW, AWARD PW, award. If you have an AMI BIOS try AMI, A.M.I., AMI SW, AMISW, BIOS, PASSWORDS. It's also worth trying these, BIOSTAR, biostar, BIOSSTAR, biosstar. If none of these passwords work, you can try clearing the password from memory instead. To do this, you need to be in MS DOS mode, then type DEBUG and at the prompt for an AMI or Award BIOS enter O 7O 17 O 71 17 Q. For a Phoenix BIOS enter O 7O FF O 71 17 Q.

To clear the BIOS: Disconnect the PC's Power cable from the wall socket, open the case and disconnect the main power connector (from the PSU) to the Motherboard. Remove the 'watch' style battery from its socket and carefully use a metal object like a screwdriver or paper clip to connect the two battery socket terminals (+ and -). This will disperse any residual charge in the BIOS and reset it to its default settings.

Go to this site, which should give you a lot of help http://www.elfqrin.com/docs/biospw.html, or you could take the battery out for about an hour, then replace. This will reset the password

*.pps are Microsoft Powerpoint files. You can get a free viewer if you don't have Microsoft Office installed from http://download.cnet.com/downloads/ click on Windows then Business and Finance. Presentation Tools then finally Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97

Been there - done that - got the T shirt. “ Windows is shutting down” ( and doesn’t – just freezes up solid ) A Microsoft ‘Patch’ to put an end to this particular shutdown misery is available for download at: www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/ contents/ WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/ Win98SE/Default.asp Hope this puts an end to that misery. Hi I'm trying to help out my teenage niece. She has a 2 year old Advent 3031 running Win 98. At present she has an ATI Rage 128 Magnum 16mb (AGP Card). It is still under extended gaurantee with PC World, and is due a free health check. She is upgrading her RAM by adding 128mb to the 64 already in place, and would like to upgrade her graphics card also. Problem is she has been given conflicting info. One technician suggested she should install a Prophet 32mb PCI card, another say's this is hopeless for games, and she would be better with a 3D Prophet II MX 32mb AGP, the difference being £25. Money being tight, can someone tell me what the difference is between PCI and AGP cards, and is it worth the extra ££. Cheers

Well first of all forget about PC WORLD they are no good at all and i can say this from going in many times and asking questions. What you do after forgeting about them is decide what she wants to do with the computer. If she wants to play games forget aobut a new graphics card what you need is a new pc! and if money is tight build your own. Belvie me its EASY!! just like lego bricks. hard part is installin the software. you can build a new Pc for around £300. But if you want to still go for pcworld dont buy any of thosse cards they are very slow. proper graphics cards cost £100 and up. AGP is much faster than PCI dont even concider PCI cards they are very slow. If you want a decend card for around£60 get the following. Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB graphics card also known as a kyro2 but make sure it is the 4500 hercules one.
