1. 99% of the time a simple reboot, (Start | Shutdown | Restart) will rebuild the systray. 2. You should have got a disk with the mouse On the disk will be a setup program. this is in addition to the driver. Insert the disk, Go to Start | Run Click the Browse button and Search on the disk for a Setp.exe file, you may have to change to "All Files" at the bottom. Once that is installed, you should have full functionality back 3. Don't be too concerned about downloading from Manufacturers site, Almost all of them scan their files before uploading to the net, and if you have Antivirus Software installed you can scan it before you install it. 4. Personally, downloading IE6 from the internet is a recipe for disaster. It is so big that it takes forever to download, with potentials for errors. If you have this weeks Web-User magazine, You may have noticed a "Tiscali" Disc inside. The disc includes IE6 on it. Install it from there. You can almost be guaranteed that it will be a clean install. You can easily revert back to 5.5 through the Add/Remove in Control Panel, though I must admit I was sceptical at first, IE6 is a winner!! ( No I don't work for Bill ;)

I have a Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 system on my PC but it has no head phone socket. Neither dose the back of the cabnet and the one on the CDR dosent work either.I have tried altering the digital output in the Device manager to no avail. Any idears? It is mainly for gaming .

What is it you are trying to do? Would I be right in assuming that you want to hear sounds on your headphones while gaming? If so It is the sound card that is the key to this. If you have a creative Sound card, than you should be able to assign the Line In on your computer as an additional speaker socket for Surroundsound type speaker systems. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds (and Multimedia) Click the "Audio" Tab In the Sound Playback section, click Advanced. In the speaker Section, change to Quadrophonic,Surroundsound or 5.1. Click Apply. Plug your headphones into your Line IN socket and turn your speakers down or off at the main Boom Box. If this doesn't work, you could always get a 3.5mm jack splitter from a good Hifi shop (£2.50) and plug it in where your speakers are plugged in now then put your Headphones and speakers into that

Steve, If you wish to uninstall them, Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. However, if you want to keep the programs installed but don't wish to see them in the Start Menu, Go to Start | Settings | Task Bar and Start Menu, click the "Advanced" Tab, Click Remove. Highlight the item you wish to remove by single left clicking it and click remove. They will still be on your C:\ Drive, in C:\Program Files, but will not show in the list in the start menu

This may be a simple question, and I apologise if it is. Can someone tell me where the driver for my scanner would be held, and confirm that once found I'd be able to copy it to floppy. I was hoping to do this, as a while ago I had to re-format my hard drive, and download the driver from the net. However, just browsing today, and the site I got it from no longer seems to have this available so I want to take a copy in case the PC goes 'pear shaped' again. Many thanks.

Panic over, as all seems ok on the website in question now, and the driver is there for download if I need it again. While I'm here, you mention in a thread above about IE6 being the business. several times recently when i have tried to defragment my hard drive it will only get to 59% and then hang forever, i have tried defragmenting with all unnecessary background programs running turned off, also on shutting down it will get as far as WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN and then hang again and the only way to shut down is by reset or switch the power off, this is obviously not a good way to do things, any help or ideas appreciated.

Colin, try running Defrag in Safe Mode. To do this, restart your computer. While your computer restarts, press and hold the CTRL or F8 key until the Windows Startup menu is displayed. What this does is basically gives you the absolute minimum needed to run your computer. Run defrag then as you would normally from Start\Programs\ Accessories\System Tools

Am I right in assuming you want a way of downloading your MP3s to the Multimedia card? If so, why not get a card reader like this http://www.card- media.co.uk/MultiMedia +Card- SD+Readers.htm, I'm sure a search on the net could probably find a cheaper alternative. Has other advantages if you also have a digital camera as you could download your photos quicker. It acts like an additional drive which means transfer of data is quicker

Your welcome Alan. Something you could try, if you have PSP, is while your using office 97, laucnh psp at the same time, then you can click on an image in office, then right click, and choose copy, then goto psp, and then choose edit, then paste, then you can save the image in psp as a jpeg, that maybe simpilar.

You could try using PSP7, Paint Shop Pro 7. Then open up the image, and then choose file, save as, and where it says save as type, click the arrow, and choose JPEG.

Welcome to the world of computing, Paul.(and years of fun or frustration!!) First thing to do is get your computer to set as Active Desktop. Right click anywahere on your desktop apart from on an icon) and click "Active Desktop" and click "show web content" The customising of your computer is mainly dealt with by your Control Panel. (Start | Settings | Control Panel) So once you're in there, have a look around and you will see a number of icons. Amongst these are Display and Sounds (and Multimedia, depending on your version of Windows) Answering your questions in order, double click on the Display icon, an applet should pop up with number of tabs at the top, one of which will be background. In the bottom, is Select a background, you can either choose from the selection that you see in the left frame or you can choose your own by clicking "Browse" and going to a picture that youhave downloaded or copied. Once you have decided on your picture, you can tile it (multiple images) Centre it (self explanatory) or stretch it (full screen) The image may get distorted in this format. When you're happy, press Apply then OK. Now got Sounds (and Multimedia) In Sounds, scroll down to "Start Windows" single click on it to highlight it and click the downward arrow by name. Choose your sound (including none) or choose a sound you have recorded or downloaded by clicking on Browse. click Apply and then OK. Finally bmp to jpg. Go to the following website http://www.irfanview.com and download a program (700kb FREEware) install it, it will ask you which type of images you wish to associate with this program choose bmp, compuserve gif and jpg(jpeg). Once you have done that open your bmp in Irfanview and than Go to File | Save As At the bottom is Save as Type, click jpg and then Save. I hope this is clear enough, but post back if you're having any problems!!

Some older BIOS/CMOS used a diff, combination of keys to get into their setup programme, try pressent CTRL,ALT, and tapping Enter, if that fails then try same first two keys, then press S, if that fails then first two keys again, and ESC. Failing that, there is some Diagnostic software that will allow you into it, but not sure if it will allow you to alter passwords.

There is only way to protect your computer in the way that you wish to, and that is to enter a password in BIOS. Even that can be overcome by removing the battery for half an hour or by using a backdoor. If you still want to go ahead, Restart your computer and press DEL at start up, go to Supervisor Password, give yourself a password.

You only need to have the Explorer programme running, while you test your system. But closing down all other programmes, will stop you from using some devices, but once you reboot, they will be there so things should work as normal. To close them all off, except Explorer. hold down CTRL, ALT keys, and tap the DEL key, this will show a list of all the programmes that are running. click on each one in turn, and choose end task, do this until you only have the Explorer programme running. Then launch your test programme. Some might say that you should keep the systra, to, but it isnt necessary, while your testing. Once test is done, check results, then reboot. hope that helps

I have a problem with both my cd-rom drive and my printer. The cd-rom isn't working - a message comes up saying to insert a disk into the drive, when I have. The light flashes constantly when a disk is put in as well. I downloaded a new driver for the drive (samsung scr3230), which cannot find the drive. There are no problems reported in the device manager. Looking inside, all appears to be connected. With the printer, trying to print yields the message 'cannot print to LTP1; check printer is plugged in and online' which it is! I can't reinstall the printer software due to the cd-rom problem, so what can i do??!! I have recently upgraded the motherboard, HDD (40G) and processor (AMD 1600), and have Windows Me.Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Unless you have a second Hard drive and a second Cd drive ofr DVD drive, Could you post the full details of your system on the board ie Hard drives, Cd, cdrw, dvd etc. and we might be able to help you better

Righty o - I only have one hard disk (maxtor 6L040J2), and one cd-rom drive (samsung scr-3230)(no cdrw/dvd etc), which is currently set as the secondary slave. In norton utilities system information, under the multimedia tag, Animation 1 reads this message: Error #274 (MMSYSTEM The MCI device you are using does not support the specified command). Until last night, the boot order in the bios (award modular V.6.00) was cd-rom|floppy|HDD, which I changed to HDD|floppy|cd-rom, as on startup, a message appeared saying 'boot from ATAPI cd-rom' followed by a cursor blinking ferocoiusly until the cd-rom drawer was opened & closed. This has now stopped due to the order being changed. We had a power cut 2 nights ago - is this a factor? Thank you again.

OK, two more things to check now, and hopefully we can get this all sorted for you. Does the IDE cable (ribbonlike cable) that goes from the motherboard to your Hard drive also go to your CD-ROM, or does the CD-ROM use a separate one. If it is the former, the CD-ROM should be set as your Primary Slave drive in BIOS. If it is on a separate cable, it should be your Secondary Master in BIOS. On the back of your CD-ROM, there will be some markings that show MA SL CS, and there will be a small "jumper" switch ( A little black Plastic caplike object) and four prongs visible. If the CD-ROM is on the same IDE cable as the Hard drive, the jumper should be on the two metal pins marked SL, and if it is on it's own cable, it should be on the MA pins. If necessary, remove the jumper with tweezers and move to the correct pins

Ok - I shall check all this when I get home ( I have drawn a diagram to your formula!) So, accepting all this, how do I go about changing the BIOS setting from secondary slave to the correct setting (dependant on where the cable are)? Oh, thank you very much Iain for your help so far!

Once you enter BIOS, go to Standard CMOS Setup, Press your arrow to The field Primary Slave (or Secondary Master) and press your "+" on your number pad until you see CD-ROM

Hello again Iain! I have checked all this, and there are seperate cables from the motherboard to each of the drives, so in the BIOS it should be set to Secondary master.(There is a red line on the edge of the cables which is facing away from the motherboard) The back of the cd-rom doesn't seem to have any letters written next to the four prongs. There are two, placed vertically, and two placed horizontally, the jumper being on the horizontal pair. So I'm not sure whether this is right or not. I couldn't get the fields to change in the bios, using the + key or - key(num lock was on!), or the PU/PD additional option given in the help section. Help!! As before, thank you.

Hi there - some messages seem to have disappeared - so I'll repeat my motherboard info - its a jetway VT8366-8233. I've changed the jumper on the cd-rom to MA, and it has been automatically changed to secondary slave in the bios, but it still isn't working! Do you think the cd-rom itself is faulty?(i'm not altogether sure if its the same one which came with my dell optiplex which was upgraded & put into a tower case) Thanks again!
Chris - Glasgow - Sat Jan 19 14:18 2002

Chris, Open BIOS at the bottom of the CMOS setup page, it should give you a key as to which keys to use to change values. It should definitely be set to secondary master or to Auto. There is a minor possibility that it is faulty, but unlikely as it is reading it ok

Hi there - in the bios, the cd-rom is set as secondary master; but I am still met with the error message telling me to insert a disk when there is one inside the drive. It is making a whirring noise and ticks every half second or so while the the laser tries to read the disk. I have tried a variety of disks, cd-rom and audio cd which all get the same treatment from this most pesky of drives!
Chris - Glasgow - Sun Jan 20 14:46 2002

Chris, sounds like the laser isn't managing to read the discs, see if you can clean the lens and the discs. There are several cd cleaning kits out there. If that doesn't work, it may be a case of a dead drive! Sorry :(

I would like some help on Desktop.ini files please. I have 12 of them on my Windows ME system, 6 of which are hidden system files. Should I have this many, some of which I recognise as being created when the pc was misbehaving? Also what do they do?

Iain...You recently gave some advice about removing fonts to the effect that certain fonts can be safely removed if they are after a certain date. How do I know what that date should be? I'm running ME and on the general tab of 'my computer' it says: system windows me 4.90.300. How do I find a corresponding date? Hope you can help.
Pete Bates - Rotherham - Thu Jan 17 12:22 2002

Open the fonts folder, Go to View, Click Details. You should now see Four columns, Font name, file name, size and modified. If the date modified isn't 4/23/99 it can be deleted safely.

Anyone have any tips on how to improve my video playing performance????? My computer has a voodoo 4 graphics card ,a amd k6 2 500mhz processor and some 20 quid sound blaster or other sound card. I think this should be a decent setup especially the voodoo. When playing games or on encarta however videos do not play too well they go crackling freeze then restart. It is also this way with videos off the net (though not as bad) and even with my dvd's which is the most important thing.

Your machine is capable of play what you require but i will warn you that it is borderline(DVD decoding ideally needs 450Mhz+ for good playback). The main thing for you to check is that you have the most recent drivers for you graphics card. You don't say how much memory you have, if you have less than 64MB consider upgrading to 64MB or even 128MB. You can never have too much memory. Driver upgrade first and free, memory second and not very expensive 128MB £30.

How do I save files to CD-R?
Glenn - Middlesbrough - Wed Jan 16 21:03 2002

Hi You do not say what cd/r program you are using. I have Nero 5. Assuming you have the same: Inset cd/r disc in writer.Click on Nero, if it does not open with the wizard one of the buttons on the righthand side will say wizard, click on it. Normally it opens with the wizard already in front. Ensure compile new cd is indicated and click next. Now you want data cd, click next. now you want compile new data cd,c lick next. You should have 4 windows. Two on right show your hard drive and other drives. Two on left are the cd/r panes. Drag and drop from your hard drive panes to the cd/r panes. Eg graf the folder My Documents to the right hand pane. When you have graged and dropped what yo want hit the Burn button. Just go for burn. it should go into action. and tell you when completed. give the help files a read. Admitedly they are written in geekesse. If sill have problems do what I do and ask your thirteen year old know it all. If you can do a music disc a data disc it a breeze. mac

I have never saved files to CD-R only music and I don't format the disk before doing so. However when I save files (as opposed to music) to CD-RW I've found you have to format the disk. I use Adaptec which came free with the PC and works pretty well.

Need's formatting. On nero 5 there is a tool for formatting cdrw's so they can be used like floppys. I think you can get it from the net. I'm still working out my writer myself so sorry.

I found the same problem and have since started using Add Remove Plus! from http://www.aurelitec.com/ and it works great. On the main screen it shows you if the file is complete or has info missing (unlike the one in the control panel) and it always tries to uninstall using the programs own uninstller first. It even checks to see wether the details ahve been rfemoved fro the registry.

Find the program folder in Windows Explorer and open it. Hopefully, there will be a file called uninst. If so click that and the program should be uninstalled

There is a programme that you can use to do this with, but really, if you know where the programme is on your hd, you can go to start, run, browse, find the appropriate folder, and run the uninstall programme, if there isnt one, then you can deleted the programme using Windows Explorer, be warned that deleted files may result in loss of important files, so if your unsure leave alone. If it isnt broke dont fix it. It wont matter if the programme info is still in add/remove programmes, after you have deleted the programme.

i have read somewhere that you can speed up a pc start up slightly by disabling the odd item windows system check that is not required eg, the check on the floppy (a:\ drive) on start or close the noise is annoying when there is no disc in it just makes that horrible cranking noise, can you tell me how to disable the a\ drive check - as long as it works when i want to use a floppy regards paul

Restart your computer and go into BIOS (most likely to press Del at start) Go to the BioS Setup Feature. 1st Boot Device should be IDE 0 (or 1 if there is no 0) Disable 2nd and 3rd devices. Disable Floppy Drive Seek. PLEASE NOTE:- You will have to re-enable it and Boot Devices if you have to format your hard drive in the future, and if you cannot see the floppy drive you may have to re-enable Floppy Drive Seek
