Can anyone recommend a suitable PCI card that will handle both video and audio copying to do this ?. System details - Celeron500 + Win98SE Thanks in advance Dave Rose - Gillingham - Mon Mar 04 00:19 2002 reply I should be grateful for some advice. I am running Windows 98SE. My current firewall is the free version of Zone Alarm but I am thinking of changing over to the Norton Internet Security 2002 package, which includes a firewall. However I was put off when I had a look in the Zone Alarm Help file for details on how to uninstall the program. It seems rather frightening for a rank amateur like myself. It talks about deleting programs in the registry-or am I reading it wrongly? Zone Alarm is listed in the Add/Remove Programs feature on my computer, which states that 'The following software can be automatically removed by Windows'. Can't I just click on Zone Alarm then on Add/Remove? Further, any views on how the Norton firewall compares with the free Zone Alarm program? If there isn't a lot to choose between them, I wonder about sticking with Zone Alarm and just adding the Norton AntiVirus 2002 program. Many thanks for any help you would care to give. Denis Burgess - Telford - Sun Mar 03 15:43 2002 reply Denis, go to Start | Programs | Zonelabs | Uninstal Zonealarm, Click "Yes" to are you sure? This will remove all the registry entries. The only thing I would be considering is that in a years time, I would be having to pay for any updates Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sun Mar 03 15:56 2002 reply I have recently been experiencing a problem opening MSPaint. Thank you. Lee - Cornwall - Sat Mar 02 16:31 2002 reply Lee, what is means is that the registry entry for Paint is damaged. To solve this First go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | "Windows Setup" tab | Accessories | click Details Uncheck Paint, click ok and ok. Now go to Start | Run | type in regedit Find the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint Delete the entry, and restart your computer. Now go back to "Windows Setup" tab as described above and recheck Paint, click ok, and ok. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sun Mar 03 15:47 2002 reply Hi all, My son who is disabled, uses a laptop for school work. He's only had it a couple of weeks but almost every time he tries to shut down, it gets as far as the "Windows is shutting down" message and then just sits there. He's having to power off every time and run scan disc on every restart. He hasn't the time for this in every lesson. Windows help file suggests a damaged soundfile so I disabled the shutdown sound but it hasn't made any difference. Can anyone help please. Di - Lancs - Sat Mar 02 09:07 2002 reply Di, I would suggest that you go to this website, aumha troubleshooting , this I personally believe is the best resource for solving Windows shutdown problems. Obviously, you can ignore the bit about damaged sound file Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Mar 02 11:47 2002 reply Ian, you are a wonder. Solved immediately- it was Advanced Power Management. What happens to stuff I've opened with Winzip once I've finished working on them?. Do they automatically zip themselves back up again or do I have to do this myself - and how?. Using the current version (8.1?) and windows 95. Need to save as much space as possible. I also think I might have put loads of stuff in there as well accidentally!. Will it be safe to delete everything and still have copies of the origional stuff elsewhere?. I can see things like Zone Alarm alarm and lots of other things listed when I open Winzip. I didn't mean to put all this stuff in there, but I somehow managed it when I was trying to work out how it all worked when I first downloaded it a week or two back. Sorry to be a nuisance, Regards, Steve. Anyone know how to fix these problems Kevin - Norwich - Thu Feb 28 23:06 2002 reply The first thing that you need to do is ensure that you have the latest driver for your modem. If you aren't sure who made your modem, click here Next thing to do is to increase the buffering between your modem and your modem port Right click my Computer. Click Properties. Click Hardware. Click Device Manager. Double Click Ports. Double Click the appropriate Com port. Click Port Settings. Click Bits per second and change it to the highest supported speed. Click Flow Control and change it to Hardware. Click OK. Click OK. OK.. To fix the modem sound problem, go to Control Panel, click modem. On the General Tab, click Properties, slide your modem volume to the level you require Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Mar 02 05:55 2002 reply Hi! It will only play the first track for about 30 secs.I've downloaded microsoft's patch and tried 16x and 8x, but nothing works. Please help! (Incidentally, my three favourite keyboard buttons... groan!) Does anybody know, or is there an explanation anywhere, what these are? Navapw32(presumably Norton Anti-Virus), Sllights, Winmgmt, Manwow, Csinsm32, Devldr16, Nsprotect, Csinject, Wkdetect? Obviously, I never close Systray and Explorer (ahem), but I've often wondered if it's safe to close these others? Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Feb 27 12:34 2002 reply Thanx Ian, Yep, that's certainly cleared a few things up. Why does everything you install, have to add itself to your start-up menu? I realise the program may have asked me during set-up, but surely it would be more 'polite' to add it as an option, after you've used it a few times??? hey-ho......thanx again mate, Martin Martin x - Norwich - Thu Feb 28 21:24 2002 reply I can't get into adobe 3.0 error message, the shell32dll file is linked to missing export shlwapi.dll:shregGetUSValueA, then when i click ok C:\Windows\write.exe a device attached to this system is not functioning. They used to open with Adobe Photoshop which is what I still want to use. I have changed the file associations which are now set for jpgs to open with Photoshop. I have tried your solution on p 82in the magazine which suggests to "Open with" and "always use this programme to open this kind of file" but still, every single time, they open in Ms Photo editor. It's driving me mad. In order to edit any pictures I now have to Open Photoshop first and open the photos from within the programme. What else can I try? Di - Lancs - Mon Feb 25 19:29 2002 reply i have just removed my cd-rom drive and replaced it with a cd-rw drive it has set its self up as drive e ,drive d is still listed?and i have noticed that my new drive wont play my cd audio disks?any help would be appreciated, iam running windows 98 second edition. paul - kent - Mon Feb 25 18:52 2002 reply Assuming that you have connected the audio cable to your cdrw, the way to change what drive letter the multimedia player uses, under windows 98se, go to start/control panel, then choose multi media, then click on cd music, you will see that the letter D is in the box, change this to E and your audio cds will play again. Now, as to your other problem, if your old drive is still showing, you could go to control panel, system, then choose device manager, click the + sign, to expand the cdrom and you should see two drives listed, your new one, and your old one, click on your old one, and choose remove, then shut down and restart. Another reason, maybe how you have set your cdrw on your ide channels, I tend to go for Primary for HDD, and Secondary for CDROM/CDR/W Note:, the above is for use with windows 98/98se. If this fails, then I would suggest that you re-install Windows 98se, preferably not an upgrade version of 98 but full version of 98se Future - Thu Feb 28 03:39 2002 reply Hello, What version of Windows do you have, what is your hard drive size? and how much memory do you have. Something to try, run scandisk, to see if there is any corrupt data. It is best to do this in safe mode, so, when your puter starts, press F8 and a menu should appear, choose safe mode, then run scandisk. Repost if problem persists, with system info. Future - Mon Feb 25 13:50 2002 reply hello, i have windows 98 updated from windows, the hard drive is 20gig and the memory i think is 128. both motherboard and hard drive are new but harddrive formatted, the machine has been fully cleared out and full re-boot done we have run scan disk, to no avail, also what is iexplore, being another error thats keeps rearing its ugly head, all help greatfully recieved, ty anne harris - bath - Mon Feb 25 14:25 2002 reply Runonce is usually associated with setups of programs. iexplore is Internet Explorer, the fact that the two together are making regular appearances suggest some form of Spyware is trying to install itself or has installed itself. The most likely causes are one of two programs, Aureate and Save Now. Aureate is associated mainly with Go-zilla (and 250 other shareware progs) Save now is an insidious program that makes a mess of a lot of computers. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. If Save now is there, remove it. If you have downloaded Go-zilla, remove that and get another Download Manager, such as Download Accelerator. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Feb 25 17:33 2002 reply Wondering if you could help me?....I have a PC which all of a sudden has developed a problem, in that upon boot up finishing, a blue error screen comes up with the warning 'Invalid dynamic link call from HOTKEY(01) to device 000C....Windows configuration is invalid...'. It asks you if you want to continue and if Yes is pressed the desktop comes up but with its display size and icons all increased, and also with the added problem of the mouse not functioning at all. I've run a scandisk but no errors were shown up. Is this a case of re-formatting the hard drive (tips on doing this would be appreciated!!), and re-installing the software? Thanking you in advance... J Joe N. - Herts - Mon Feb 25 11:48 2002 reply Hello, what OS do you have? The error is a registry, error, so, if you have 98, goto start, choose run, then type in sfc, and press enter, this will check for corrupt files, and if any are found, it will prompt you to replace them, but you will need your 98 cd. Then if no errors are found, goto start, and choose run, then type in scanreg, and press enter, if any errors are found, it will prompt you to use a back up copy, if the backup copy is good, then the error will go, however, remember that you may have to re-install some software, if you installed anything after the last time the registry was backed up. JAlanG - Liverpool - Sun Feb 24 10:00 2002 reply Windows ME has now been nicknamed as ME= Memory Eater because of a serious flaw in design. What is happening that some programmes that you opened do not release RAM on closing down. Poor windows keep on working with meagre left over free RAM by constantly changing over to Hard disc's cache: hence the long time before it sets its house in order. Try this: switch on your computer, do not open any programme, After five minutes shut down. if this shut down is lot quicker than your usual one< Memory release might be The Problem. In that case 1. Use Enditall before shut doewn or 2. increase your RAM by visiting WWW.crucial.com or 3.Best option is upgrade to Windows XP :--: Please feed back Shubham - Enniskillen - Tue Oct 15 12:36 2002 reply hi its me again.I have been running Norton Disc Doctor in safe mode but when it gets up to 54% it resets itself to 0 any ideas please? allan hicks - swindon - Sun Feb 24 09:23 2002 reply Hi again, Thanks Iain for your help with my problem a couple of messages below. Ta MW michael webster - whaley bridge, derbs - Sat Feb 23 09:35 2002 reply possibly the driver for it isn't installed correctly? Boot up in safe mode, (so you can see all the drivers!)right click on 'My Computer' and hit 'Properties' then 'Device Manager'..check disk drives, and look for floppy high light and refresh......or if there are several floppies listed delete and let it find it again. CynetBefore - Burnley - Sun Feb 24 10:00 2002 reply It is possible that the disk is corrupted and that is why your getting the messag saying it isnt formated. Try a new disk. It could also be, that your floppy drive has become faulty, so first, try cleaning it with a cleanning disk, then, if after you have changed the disk, and cleaned the drive, check all the powere cable to the drive and the data cable, if all the cables are connected correctly, then you could try another drive, one that you know works. I mistakingly added .mpg to the end of each file to make it a mpg file. This worked fine - however I realise now that it should have been .avi so I could use my video editing software. I'm now left with 3 1gig+ files that none of my video editing progs will edit. Any ideas of how to turn them in avi files? (I've tried adding .avi, but that only adds itself to the filename, not change the type). Thanks in advance, Cliffy. Cliffy - Stoke - Fri Feb 22 18:49 2002 reply You don't say what you recorded them as in the first place....But try renaming them to a file with no extension (windows will warn you about being unstable). Then name them back as AVI.....failing that its DOS and the rename command...there are lots of freeware programs for converting files though, try searching on Cnet CynetBefore - Burnley - Sun Feb 24 09:53 2002 reply Back to an old freeware favourite of mine for this one, Irfanview. Make sure you download not just the basic viewer, the plugins for avi and Mpg. Once you have done that, open your mpeg file, and click File | Rename, change the extension there to avi Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Feb 23 06:44 2002 reply Been having a few problems where I turned on PC and noticed that everything seemed to be smaller. Icons, tool bars, text, web paqges etc. I think now that seems to be ok, but when i open web pages the atcual site is not how it used to look eg, the BBC news site is to the far left with a large gap on the right, There was allways a gap but not that big. Also now when i click on my internet dial up the dial up itsself seems to be cut off? only part of it is being displayed? The whooe mess i think was only done with a few clicks! Can anyone help at all??????????? Terry - West London - Fri Feb 22 00:24 2002 reply Terry, My Guess is that your display settings have been changed to 1024 x 768. If you go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Display and click the Settings Tab, In the bottom right should be a Screen Area slider bar, reduce it to 800 x 600. If you can't move it, come back and let us know Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Feb 22 07:56 2002 reply Just checking my email and now find inmy folders menu all the text seems to be spaced out, in general all the txt to v large. Terry - Sat Feb 23 00:02 2002 reply Hi, thanks i have done that but in now seems "to in your face" I have checked a few websites out and there are how they were before. What is the normal setting? Terry - Fri Feb 22 23:44 2002 reply Next thing to do is to Open Internet Explorer, go to View | Text size, change to what ever you feel comfortable with, do the same for Outlook Express, Default is Medium, Personally, I always have my display at 1024 x 768, with my text at smaller, but it is purely a matter of personal preference Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Feb 23 06:54 2002 reply Thanks, now seems to work. But now when I sign on to my internet dial up, the dial up box is only 1/2 there? I have no idea why but it seems to have staarted since the screen trouble. Terry - Sun Feb 24 00:18 2002 reply Try left clicking on the Dial Up dialog box and dragging back to the centre Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Feb 27 06:35 2002 reply Just a nice new computer. One problem, though: it plays back recorded CDs too fast. Sound ok when played straight from the CD drive but when recorded they speed up - this happens in Windows Media Player and Real Player. I have noticed this happens when playing stuff from the internet also, ie radio station, etc. Please help! I can't work without music. Barry Sawyer - Morden - Wed Feb 20 10:39 2002 reply When you record from a cd it is best to record at 44khz and 16bit stereo. You can always compress the wave file later. Future - Sat Feb 23 18:35 2002 reply can any readers help a pc novice.. while trying to defrag my c drive..i keep getting a message which says.windows cannot defrag this drive because a program has changed data on the drive..how do i rectify this problem.. my system is windows me.. graham - glasgow - Tue Feb 19 21:31 2002 reply There are two ways of solving the problem Press CTRL ALT and DEL together and highlight each program and click End Task. Do this for each program that is open EXCEPT Systray and Explorer, now run your defrag Shut down your computer and as it reboots, press your Ctrl key, choose Safe Mode. Now run defrag once booted Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Feb 19 22:12 2002 reply when trying to open Norton Utilities on my desktop I get the message "the file Nuplugon.nsi is missing this must be located in Norton Utilities directory" it is, I have tried moving it then replacing it, but I still get the message, in properties archive is ticked is this correct. I have uninstalled it but it is still in my add and remove programs index....and the problem is when I now try to reinstall it I keep getting asked to insert disk in my floppy drive and I get no further it does not seem to ecognise the CD any help or ideas at all........ tom - Tue Feb 19 20:28 2002 reply Sounds like the uninstall crashed and there are some files left on the drive affecting the copy protection that most games have. Find the subdirectory for the game (probably in program files and delete the subdirectory (make sure it's the right one) then try again. Hope this helps. Nick Cheesman - Alton - Thu Feb 21 20:49 2002 reply After doing a virus scan the following results were shown C:\windows\system32 \drivers\sysaudio.001. Corrupted.C:\hp\temp\ renlg.exe. Archive: embedded exe. C:\program files\o nline services\netscape\ cd32.exe.Archive: embedded exe.Are these viruses and if so how do I remove them, apologies in advance if this in wrong forum.Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated. andyt - Mon Feb 18 19:25 2002 reply I have only suggestions, and it might be worth verifying with your AV software. drivers\sysaudio.001 is one of your sound driver files and the netscape\cd32.exe is part of netscape and are legitimate files, and I would imagine the hp file is as well. During your virus scan, did it show anything untoward? I would suggest that you delete them, as apart from the sysaudio, the others are archive files. Reinstall your sound card. Post back if you have any problems. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Feb 18 22:08 2002 reply Wasnt really concerned with the others netscape etc, thought they may be legit files. My AV (Grisoft)didnt find it nor Housecall,Panda, was found with Anti-dote, it was just the corrupted part that threw me, would this mean just reinstalling the sysaudio.001 file or as you say the sound card. andyt - Mon Feb 18 23:48 2002
Subscribe to Web User and save up to 15% More details |
