I am trying to transfer audio files from my mini-disc to my PC, but can get no sound from my PC speakers. I am connecting the mini-disc phones socket to the PC line-in socket, but still no sound. The system I use is Windows XP. Have checked that both my cable and mini-disc player are working okay on other PCs. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Iris - Dundee - Mon Aug 05 20:58 2002 reply Hi Iris There is a good chance the "line in" volume control is the problem.Right click on the speaker icon, that controls your volume. It is at the bottom right of your screen near the clock. Then left click on "open volume control" Now look for the "line in" volume control, this should be turned up. At the bottom of the volume control make sure the "mute" box is not ticked. If you cannot access the line in control from your speaker icon, do it this way. Left click Start--left click Control panel--left click Sounds,speech--left click Adjust the system volume--In the "device volume" section left click "Advanced", then find the "line in" volume control. Just check the settings as I mentioned earlier. Hope this helps! BOBO bobo - motherwell - Sat Aug 10 23:54 2002 reply Hi Iris, I'm not 100% sure here but here goes. Have a look at you MD player. Is there a Line-Out socket (similar to the phones socket). I know that my MP3 player has both Line-Out and Phones sockets, but I dont know about MD players. If there is, plug your cable into this socket and then the other end into your PC's Line-In socket. Hopefully this should work. Karl - Stoke - Mon Aug 05 22:50 2002 reply Karl, thanks for your quick response - much appreciated. have checked and double checked connections between mini-disc and PC and confirmed they are 100% ok. Peter Johnson Smith - Cardiff - Mon Aug 05 16:01 2002 reply Hello Peter, Does this programme appear in your Install/Uninstall panel? If so try deleting from there. You could also try deleting manually to the recycle bin to see what effect, if any, it has on other programmes. A bit risky this because of the file sharing between programmes. It is as you probable know possible to restore from the recycle bin but it’s still risky. Backup everything before proceeding with anything like this. If your computer is working efficiently otherwise and the screen saver no longer appears its best to ignore this completely. This is simple to use, has a very good uninstaller, allows me to clear out old unwanted files, take a snapshot of my hard drive and backup my registry. You probably could get a more recent version free from the Web if your PC is becoming cluttered. If not you could try it on a free trial basis. George - Choppington - Wed Jul 31 22:54 2002 reply I can spend around £170. Was looking at DVD burners as well but these see to be out of my range. My trouble is that my hard drive keeps failing and needing replacement so I need a reliable backup solution. I'm also confused as to the benefits/disadvantages of internal vs external drives. I take it internal is better? There doesn't seem to be a "CD burning for idiots" place out there. - Thu Aug 01 14:16 2002 reply "CD burning for Idiots",oh yes there is,I'm in that category, welcome to the club. First things first, you don't necessarily need to spend all of your £l70.Secondly,internal v external, the advice I have read is externals are slower but you don't need to open your computer case ,and they are more expensive. However Plextor have produced a compatible version of external, pricey I think but a visit to Plextors site will be worth a visit.Internals, there are many from £40 available.I bought a Liteon CDRW,check their site.I have no experience but am perfectly happy as Nero software's Wizard does all the work. Finally,if you have XP,then it has it's own built software making life easier still. Good luck. George - Choppington - Thu Aug 01 20:27 2002 reply P.S. Good luck Liam - Liverpool - Fri Aug 02 15:11 2002 reply Thanks guys; very helpful. One last question; I'm looking at a TEAC drive (recommended by a magazine that shall remain nameless) which writes CDR at 48x. The trouble is I can't seem to find any discs to suit it. The highest I've come across is 32x. Is it unwise to use discs these in this drive, and what would happen if I did? Would 48x discs cost more? Is there really any point in owning one that writes at 48x when I have to dig for the discs? Thanks! - Mon Aug 05 16:25 2002 reply I quote from written advice "The faster a drive is the higher it costs,it's worth thinking about whether a 32 speed drive that can write an entire CDR in 2 mins is worth paying much more for than a l6 speed drive that does it in 4 mins" Faster drives require blank CDs designed for high speed and cost more than others. Hope this helps your decision. George - Choppington - Mon Aug 05 20:43 2002 reply The performance and speed of writers is improving dramatically. Yet as you have gathered the writer can only write as fast as the media( CDR or CDRW ) allows. However poised with the option of a 48x or a 32x I would opt for the faster writer simply because it will not just write faster but also be able to read faster and re-write faster.48x media will be readily available soon therefore driving down the cost and as you will see writing speeds do not stand still for too long. Less than a year ago 8x speed was pretty much top of the range. I appreciate what George is saying about the difference in time not being a big issue but if you are using CDRW then the speed can be a factor when choosing a drive especially if you writing and re-writing alot. What can you do? 1: First, undo recent changes. If you've added or removed new hardware, altered CMOS settings, or installed new software, there's a good chance those changes are the cause of your problems. 2: If your PC has been running well and has not been altered it won't just die suddenly, (in general ). 3: So if your problems can't be solved by obvious solutions - like plugging in an unplugged power cord - try returning your PC to its original, untroubled configuration. But Remember, problems do sometimes arise without provocation. Hard disks crash, chips burn out, and monitors eventually expire. Software, too, can be corrupted. A power failure or an accidental press of the reset button can shut Windows down improperly, damaging key files, and that can lead to all kinds of trouble. The last user had a problem "she can't remember" which involved a reboot, and now the system says (via a rescue disk) that a partition file is missing. Does this mean we've lost everything on the hard drive, and is there a way out of it? Much obliged if anyone can help. D. Eseperate - London - Tue Jul 30 18:05 2002 reply Hi. A possible solution would be to locate a copy of Partition Magic 7.0 and use it to reset the partition table. This is no help if you cannot get Windows to load though, so I would suggest using an emergency boot disk to get to DOS and copy any important files to floppy disk (Hoping that they are small enough to fit) and reloading Windows 98. This should then allow you to use FDisk before formatting the hard disk to allocate all partitions correctly and set them up properly. It sounds like the last person has deleted some of the OS files relating to the partition structure of the disk, and this may be a major problem. I hope all goes well, and you get your PC back. Joe Brennan - London. - Tue Jul 30 13:38 2002 reply yes lve checked all the cables, the clicking l mentioned is when l turn the monitor button on all it does is "click" there is no other activity.thanks sandy - sunny redcar - Tue Jul 30 16:13 2002 reply Here are a few more tips I stumbled across, no guarantees you understand but it’s worth reading. Hope you find a solution. Do not open you’re Monitor, I understand it can be extremely dangerous. Your Screen is blank CHECK THE OBVIOUS. Start by checking all your cables -monitor, keyboard, and others - and Of course don't forget the power cords for both the computer and the monitor. It's best to completely unseat them and reattach them to ensure you have a solid connection; a connector that looks and even feels like it's firmly attached may not be. And don't forget to check your anti surge protector if you have one. Some surge protectors come with fuses or circuit breakers that can be triggered by an intermittent power surge. Most surge protectors have a small button that you can press to reset it and get the power flowing again. You might even try another power cord to make sure that hasn't gone bad. IS IT YOUR MONITOR OR YOUR PC? If your Monitor gets it's power from the wall socket and NOT from your PC then you should see a green or orange power light, you now know that the Monitor is getting power, if there is no green or orange light you will have to check the power cord and fuse connecting your monitor to the wall socket. If your Monitor gets it's power from your PC then the easiest way to find out for sure what works and what doesn't is to connect a working monitor to your PC. If the test monitor works, your monitor is bad. Alternatively, you could connect your monitor to another PC; if it works, something in your PC is at fault. If your monitor is defunct, you may find someone who can repair it, but usually a New Monitor is needed. You could make this a reasonable excuse to upgrade to a larger or better model. If your Monitor is OK then the problem is in your PC, Listen carefully to your system as it powers up, and look for a green power-on light on the front of your PC's case. If you don't hear the whir of your hard disk spinning up and the hum of your power supply fan - which should be visible on the rear of your PC - then you're not getting power to the PC. The likely cause is a bad power supply that will need repaired or replaced. If you suspect the power supply is bad and you're comfortable tinkering with your PC's innards, you can replace it yourself. Otherwise, take it to the shop or your local guru. But before you do, try reseating your PC's expansion cards: Sometimes the cards can partially work their way out of their slots on the motherboard. If so more information here: http://www.mantadb.com/faq.htm Joe Brennan - London - Sat Jul 27 21:52 2002 reply Wow, what can i say! Well, I have a Pentium III with 400 odd MhZ , a 6gb hard drive and 63mb of RAM. I also have set myself 1.2gb of virtual memory due to my low amount of RAM. Well, the problem seems to be getting worse, and I have had to get FreeMem Pro, which frees up RAM, but even that isn't fixing it completely. Well, usually my PC works fine with many applications open and programs, but now, its limited to just a few applications including ones in my task list. Things have gotten so bad, about 80% of my restarts are because my PC has crashed, and I can't afford to open up any other programs. If i get it up and running, take a look at my RAM Graph. In this graph, i had just msn messenger running and netscape, then i took away messenger and nothing happened. I took away Netscape, the RAM went up a little, and i have to constantly free RAM using Freemem Pro It appears that something is eating the memory, as i have scandisked and defragmented, and am not sure what to do next. Of course, more RAM is priority, but i cant get it for another few months. To put this into perspective, when the pc starts up with only my anti virus(grisoft), my intellipoint program, freemem pro and msn messenger, freemem pro tells me i have basically no RAM left(below 1mb). Also, is there any program which will allow me to check which programs are taking up how much RAM??? Thanks in advance Chris Provan - Glasgow - Sat Jul 27 17:43 2002 reply Hi. You don't mention what Operating System you are running. If you are running Windows 98 you should be OK with 64Mb Ram, but anything newer than that (Like ME, 2000, XP etc) requires at least 128Mb RAM, although under 256Mb RAM is still dodgy. The operating system is the biggest eater of RAM, and it may be that your OS is just eating all the available memory in which case you will not be able to do anything other than buy more memory (I would advise buying as much as your pocket will allow up to 1Gb). If you are positive that the OS is not the cause of your memory loss, then try hitting CTR+ALT+DEL and this will then show you a list of all the applications running at that time. As for applications that show memory usage, the only one that I know of that shows what programs are using what memory is Norton Systemworks. This suite is also a damn fine purchase for the fact that it can also remove unneeded programs, find Windows problems, defrag etc etc a load better than the standard OS can. I hope this helps a little bit. Ray Ray Hogan - Gillingham, Kent - Sat Aug 03 05:34 2002 reply hi chaps, being a bit naive with PC's, i wonder if anyone can help. Then simply click and drag the graphic onto the text and it should fit round it. Hope this helps. Thanks Chris - Lancaster - Fri Jul 26 18:03 2002 reply Much of my daily work is spent communicating with other offices and depts through email and our firm's Intranet. As the bulk of the work involves to-ing and fro-ing between different systems with different passwords/pins etc., would it be possible to set-up a single Intranet page with a number of hyperlinks to the most frequently used sites on those systems, and be able to click straight through to them without having to enter user details every time? I'd appreciate a quick reply if possible. Thanks Chris - Lancaster - Fri Jul 26 17:57 2002 reply Can anyone help! I have just gone in to open my email and now all i get up is: MSimn Illegal operation etc etc then it cloes down. Does anyone know why this is? Terry - London - Fri Jul 26 01:37 2002 reply I assume you are using Outlook Express. From what I read at the site, it is possible you may have created a message rule. Open Outlook Express. Click on Tools/Message Rules/Mail. In the Menu that opens check to see if you have ticked any of the checkboxes. Hope this helps. Tim Baker - London - Thu Jul 25 21:23 2002 reply Hi!. Help would be appreciated please. When running system file checker a message comes up - user.exe and setupx.dll possibly corrupted. I have gone to DrD95 website and downloaded the setupx.dll file to my program files folder. I dont think this is where it belongs and I cannot open it being a PC novice dont know which of the multiple choices to click on. Also can anyone please tell me how to rectify the user.exe file as I have completely rebooted twice but the message still crops up when I do the SFC check. Thanks. Keith - Oldham - Thu Jul 25 19:20 2002 reply Using newly installed CDRW with Nero for first time I inserted disc before activating Nero,up popped XP's own Wizard.Staying with it I copied some pictures,or at least the Wizard did,so simply.Afterwards checked Help and Support but compared with Nero there seems few options on offer,so went searching in all Programs for more detail but no menu listing.Where is it hiding ? anyone know ?,or does the Wizard only come out when a disc is inserted. George - Choppington - Wed Jul 24 19:30 2002 reply the wizard only appears, as far as I know when you choose the 'write these files to a cd' option which needs a cd in the drive,so yes,it only comes up when you have a disk in so if i were you I'd launch nero first then put thge disk in. you could uninstall XP then re-install nero and the cd-rw drive, always supposing it was an upgrade though oh and you will have to re-install any other programs you have installed, always supposing that XP is just like 95 as to uninstall + progs installed while OS is installed, which is to uninstall them (the programs you installed while OS installed). then supposing you can uninstall. I know this is a long post, but i really think it will help you with your problem. regards, and hoping it fixes it, sam p.s. also check windows update. sam stabeler - croydon - Thu Jul 25 17:27 2002 reply Thanks Sam, so my guess was right.Next time Nero first then disc in,XP allows this,I was curious as to how much the XP support provided. Having found the XP Expert Zone via another website I have learned XP's program is limited and recommends third party software for more options. George - Choppington - Thu Jul 25 20:05 2002 reply p.s. For the record, if, like my self, anyone is new to computers and XP in paticular, then I would recommend logging on to Windows XP Expert Zone.I have not searched the entire site but have seen enough to be assured. George - Choppington - Thu Jul 25 20:25 2002 reply could you give me the website address george for the xp expert zone, thanks. george mullen - port glasgow - Wed Sep 18 02:01 2002 reply Hi I have windows xp and used the restore point today. But when i checked my disk space it has used up 3% how can i get this back can you delete restore points and if so how hope someone can help thanks. max - belfast - Tue Jul 23 18:08 2002 reply Hi Max. If you click on START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/DISC CLEAN-UP. Allow the clean-up to run then you have a report on the files that can be deleted. Before you press ok, click on MORE OPTIONS. At the bottom you have SYSTEM RESTORE, by pressing clean-up all but the most recent restores will be deleted. BEFORE you press clean-up make sure your system is running as you wish it because the files cannot be returned.Hope this helps Tony. Antony Abbott - Blandford Forum - Sat Jul 27 17:26 2002 reply Hi Everyone, my PC had 64meg of memory and i've just put another 256meg in.When i went to control panel and then system it still reads as 64meg.I put the 256 in dimm slot 1 and the 64 into slot 2.I'm running windows 98.Thanks in advance Kev - Hebburn - Tue Jul 23 16:25 2002 reply try switching the 256meg PC133 for a PC100 256meg this should solve it. regards, sam sam stabeler - croydon - Thu Jul 25 17:35 2002 reply Hi Kev You do not mention what motherboard you have so presuming you are using one that does not need two identical banks of memory installed ( mostly Rambus Memory requires this)try this first. Take out the 64MB memory and put a blanker in. Restart your PC then run Scan Disk. Restart the Pc and go to My Computer and click on properties to check that the memory has been installed.Next go to the bios and check the configuration of the memory to enable error checking( only if its ECC memory) and also to check that the Mhz is correct. Hope this may help. Liam - Liverpool - Tue Jul 23 17:05 2002 reply Hi Liam, thanks for the reply mate.Heres an update.I have a SIS530 mainboard socket7 (please bear with me, i'm a bit thick with computers) I don't have a blanker so i can't try what you said.I did take the 64 out and put the 256 in by itself but the computer would not even boot up. The only other thing of relevance is that the 256 is PC133 and the 64 is PC100.Thanks for your time Kev - Hebburn - Tue Jul 23 20:46 2002 reply Kev, Done alittle bit of fishing for you. If you have tried the memory in both slots it is probably the wrong type. Mixing PC100 and PC133 is probably not the best thing to do. I know some will work on the lowest FSB speed, but not yours. Oh, by the way PC133 is the bus speed on your mainboard. Here is the link to your SiS530 and here is a link for the correct memory upgrade and general information on how to mix and match memory Have a good look and get back to the guys if you have other problems. NickG - Portsmouth - Wed Jul 24 01:19 2002 reply Kev, In addition to the advice given by Liam and Nick above here is a site with lots of information on upgrading your random access memory. It has a dropdown selection Menu to help you select the type suitable to your computer as well as instruction diagrams. http://www.legge40.freeserve.co.uk/RAM.htm Joe Brennan. - London - Wed Jul 24 08:07 2002 reply Hello, when I launch Outlook Express 5 it stops responding straight away, unless i'm already online before launching it, in which case it works fine. Any thoughts or suggestions? John - Stockport - Mon Jul 22 19:48 2002 reply Hi John, There appears to be a lot of problems of this nature with OE and IE. I’m afraid I’m unable to offer you a definite fix or guaranteed solution. However, assuming you are using IE5.5 or IE6.0, you might try the following possibilities I stumbled across recently:- Open Outlook Express. Click Tools, Options and "Synchronize OE settings with IE". Check to see if that cures the problem. No joy, Go to control Panel click on Add/Remove and scroll down to your Internet Explorer and highlight it, then press delete ONCE. In the box that opens click on REPAIR. Once repaired and your back at the Desktop. Click IE, sort out your Language and Home page, and then go to Outlook Express. Once again click Tools, Options and "Synchronize OE settings with IE". Also check Windows Update for any Critical Updates for IE. If that doesn’t work you might find some answers at the Microsoft support site (http://search.support.microsoft.com) Or here:- www.tomsterdam.com/insideOE/problems Joe Brennan - London. - Wed Jul 24 09:51 2002 reply Hello Joe, Thanks for the suggestions but no luck i'm afraid. Michelle - Ireland - Sun Jul 21 17:37 2002 reply Can anyone help please? I want to upload a photo (Jpeg)onto a website but the file size is apparently too big. I feel sure it must be easy to reduce the size of the photo but don't know how. Any help much appreciated. Glenn - Leicester - Sun Jul 21 17:26 2002 reply If you have any sort of image editing software you should see an option to optimise the image. Increasing the amount of optimisation will reduce the file size although you might have to reduce the physical size of the image to get the number of kilobytes to an acceptable level. If you don't have any software (and the image is under 200kb) you can edit it online at http://www.myimager.com/ Just go to the site, select the image on your PC, select Quality in the Optimize drop-down menu and then select a quality level from 1 to 99, 1 being the smallest file size but the lowest quality. You can also crop and resize the image in the same way. When you're happy with the result, right click and save the image to your PC. If you want a free image editing program you could try Irfanview which you can download from http://downloads-zdnet.com Sam - Sun Jul 21 18:33 2002 reply Hey all; am looking for a new power cable for my HP 2100C scanner, but don't know anything about reliable spare part retailers.
