CD / DVD stopped working

I am on my Mother in laws computer and her cd / dvd drive has stopped working.
I have checked the driver and it states up to date.
When I check on my computer it does not show
I have tried updating driver but it says "Microsoft deems this to be the most up to date driver"
She is running vista sp1, but this did not work before the sp.
The device manager gives the name of the dvd/ cd as "ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P ATA device"
Thanks in advance for any help.

Removing the upper and lower filters sometimes helps, have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us
