Laptop hdd interface

Hi guys,

I have to replace the HDD in my laptop. I have removed the faulty HDD so I have the correct model no. etc thinking i would be able to buy one! I have looked at numerous sites to buy a replacement but notice different interface types mentioned. How do i determine the interface i require?

Re: Laptop hdd interface

Laptop hard drives are pretty much standard, so any brand 2.5" drive will fit. Don't worry about finding the exact same model, all you need to know is, is it SATA or IDE?

SATA will have 2 L shaped connectors at the end, IDE has 2 rows of pins.

Have a look at this picture

They are desktop hard drives but they are similar connectors. The top is SATA, the bottom IDE.

Re: Laptop hdd interface

Thankyou for your post, most helpful as always. I am off to purchase one now and I am sure I will be back here at some point when I can't install it! Thanks again.

Re: Laptop hdd interface - The confusion continues...

I'm a little more confused with the interface terminology..
for eg. a hd described "80GB 2.5" IDE HARD DISK DRIVE PATA IDE LAPTOP Internal" and description further tells me the interface type is IDE but then says Interfaces/Controllers: ATA so now I have both IDE and ATA describing the same HD?

PATA means parallel ATA, SATA is Serial ATA.

If it says IDE, it's IDE. SATA drives don't mention IDE.

Incidentally, I see you're also in the West Mids. Where are you buying from? I'm in Wolverhampton and use a good, resonably priced supplier.
