New Build Wont POST

Hi all, I have put together a new system. Motherboard has a P4 connection and the PSU is 500 watts. All was well at first, PC would POST and I was able to install Vista. Switched PC back on and it would not POST (no beeps)and no video, all fans spin, HDD spins and DVD will open. Tried another PSU (300 watts) from another PC and everything was fine. I then tried the new PSU in the donor PC (which does not have a P4 connection) and it booted windows. Checked voltages at the P4 connector and had 12 volts. Retried new PSU and it still would not POST.
Have not got another motherboard with a P4 connection to try, but does this mean the PSU is faulty. Want to make sure before returning for replacement/refund.
Answers on a postcard please?

Have you Checked the BIOS settings? To see is it recognises the New OS May need an update?

Thanks for the reply BedstorfromAP. With the borrowed PSU I can boot into Vista and I was able to download the latest updates for Vista. I think I really need to try the new PSU with a motherboard that has the extra P4 (12 volt) connection to confirm it is faulty.
Maybe my motherboard is very picky about what type of PSU it uses

Its usually the reverse Its the Power demand on The Board(and Components such as Hardrives /Dvd) that means an upgrade to the PSU I had to upgrade from a 450 to a 550 watt PSU to run the AMD 4000

I can understand having to up the wattage of a PSU, but my system will run with a 2nd hand 300 watt PSU but will not with a brand new 500 watt PSU
Yet the new PSU will boot an older system without the extra P4 (12 volt) connection.

Only thing I can think of you are Using an Motherboard without a High speed SATA Drive (The Hard drive has a slim red ribbon cable which plugs into an "L" Shaped socket the Older IDE/ATA drives have the big ribbon cable ,and the Drives are "Jumpered" but the SATA Drives are Jumperless and Do not need preparation before use The motherboard Needs to have The spare plug fitted
As you saw it will run on the old board But there is no Socket provided for the P4/12V Plug. Found this off an American computer part stores page which may help with the Mystery

Just to help clarify the situation. The new motherboard is fitted with a PATA hard drive, a SATA DVD drive and a PCI express video card. The new motherboard also has the P4 connection , and the new PSU (500 watt) has a P4 plug .
The new PSU will not POST the new motherboard but will post an older motherboard that does not have a P4 connection. A second hand PSU (300 watt) that has a P4 plug will POST and boot Vista on the new motherboard.
I will be fitting the new PSU to a friends PC to see if it will POST/boot. If it doesn't POST then it must be the 12 volt rail at fault and can be sent back for refund. If it does POST then I don't know what to do.

Thats an excellent idea Rails not working Well or not at all are hard to spot without a multitester and circuit plan

SATA/PATA, baloney! The PSU sounds faulty to me.
Don’t dismiss a 300 watts PSU as it’s not the total output that matters but the amps on each of the rails. You need about 28amp on the plus3.3v, 35amp on the plus5v, 16amp on the plus12v and 1amp on the minus12v. Check out your power requirements here http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

Update - I'm now totally confused. My new PSU will POST on my friends PC which is a higher spec than mine. I have tried the system outside the case and it still would not POST. I'm currently using the 2nd hand PSU which in fact is a Magna 350 watt, with a 20 pin connection the motherboard has a 24 pin socket, (+3.3v = 20A, +5v = 25A, +12v = 12A, -12v = 0.5A, -5V = 0.5A according to the label) and seems to be stable at the moment.

Perhaps the solution to this is to use one of the working PSUs and tell the friend you can have this as a swap? Save you marching down to the computer shop and telling them its not fit for use!
You wanted something that runs the Plot..I have a Hiper brand 530 watt PSU running my SLI motherboard and its good value runs cool, and it too has the optional 12v lead cost about 45 pounds last year

Update: Ebuyer told me to return the motherboard and PSU. The carrier lost the package so I will never know what the problem was. However, Ebuyer sent me exact replacements next day and everything is working fine.
