With the AMD Phenon Multicore chips being released I have 3 questions that can be bundled together and a lot of People will be asking the same soon on all the Forums as they upgrade. The first is.... As the Phenom Processor is Very Powerful(8 Ghz and more) What will be the Minimum RAM spec to cope with the output? The New (AM2+) Motherboards are a Minimum 8GB RAM Capacity Max For now is 16 GB The older Current AM2 Boards are maxed at 4GB And the 2nd is What Speed value RAM Will be needed to Run with these Processors and B) I Note the New Board supports the 16 GB RAM Yet there are only 4 slots on the Images .Question How do you shoehorn 16 GB of RAM into a space like that? ![]() Q3 What Wattage PSU will be needed to Power this setup? |

Clarifying the wording on this point of the query... Quote: Some makers are releasing boards with 8GB. The Majority are opting for the 16 GB flavour. |

Answering myself And Its not good News Needs a lot of searching. On the RAM Speeds The Dabs site says that Several different Speeds RAM are ok with this Chip (fastest is a 1066? MHZ) Now the Bad News And believe me its BAD!! Say you want to go to 8GB, not too sure which speed? DABs say they will do a matched set for just over £2000!! ![]() I thought a GB would be £40 to £50 a stick? Just paid £40 the other day for 1GB to double the memory on this Machine Comes to £120 in total to go to full capacity (4GB) So on the same rule I'd say the 8GB RAM kit Would be in the region of £240 to £275, £300 absolute Maximum But £2K? That's many times the Price of the Computer!! Doubt if we'll see these marked down for Several Years ![]() But for this RAM Issue the Whole plot looked affordable |

Back later with some News on the RAM Price Issue I do believe(subject to confirmation) that I can bring that 2K price down to a normal sounding Price.OK? Rough guide is DDR2 (1066mhz)sticks for the Top speed .So some current Spec sticks may be useable? But there are many different variations. (The Non EEC Versions are the cheaper type) EEC Circuits is an error Trap filter. But You'd never know the Difference ! ![]() EDIT GOT IT! Hows this? 2GB ( Spec as above) Uk retailer http://tinyurl.com/yqqut3 That is a large drop? PHEW!!! Double check the Specs before purchasing(Corsair XMS brand)That 8GB set is well affordable now?
