my mate needs more ram

my mate has a packard bell imedia 1402 pc but has only 256mb of ram.he runs xp but it is so slow.what size ram is best for this computer.

i recentley removed 512mb of ram from my hp 6001uk pc (which came with it), could i fit this ram into his computer ?

Provided the memory chips are of the same design, then yes. I run XP with 1 Gb of RAM which is plenty fast enough. In fact with a few tweaks, ie removing a couple of eyecandy features, I find that 1Gb is fine for Vista Ultimate too.
