Upgrading DDR RAM

Hi, I've recently tried to upgrade my PC from 256mb RAM to 512mb RAM however when I do so the Monitor will not turn on, it remains in standby. I've done as I was instructed and removed the old RAM and replaced with the new RAM stick as well as trying it in combination with the old one and using it alone in the other slot but still nothing. However when I reinsert my old RAM stick and turn it on it works fine. I hope someone can help

The obvious conclusion is that either your new memory stick is broken or it's the wrong type. Where did you get it from?
