RAM update

I have just about to receive a 256MB RAM update module by post. Would I be able to fit this to my to my Motherboard with no problem or do I need someone experienced at this type of assembly, and could it effect my harddrive files if I am not careful. My computer is a Packard Bell iMedia 4508. Module Specs are 168 pin DIMM SDRAM PC133 CL=2 Unbuffered Non parity 133MHz 3.3v 32 Meg x64 my Ram memory is 128MB Any suggestions appreciated

Do it yourself. Open the case and you'll see another stick of RAM the same as your new one, stcking out from the motherboard at a right-angle. Next to it should be a spare slot with white clips at either end.
Earth yourself by touching the case or an unpainted part of radiator pipe (to discharge any static built up that can fry your RAM or other components).
Push your RAM firmly into the slot (it will only fit one way as there is a cutout about 2/3 of the way down) and the clips will move into place. Push the clips in to make sure it's held firmly in place. Don't close the case yet.
Restart and see if it boots up as normal. Check to see if it recognises the RAM by checking your system properties. If it works OK do the case back up and you're all hunky dory.
Once you've done it you won't believe you considered paying somebody.

Richie's advice about earthing yourself is important, but make sure that your PC is connected to the mains socket with the mains socket turned off, it you're going to rely on the PC case to earth you. If it's not connected to the mains socket, then the PC's case isn't earthed. If it's connected, but switched on, then you could hurt yourself!
You ought to consider buying an earthing-wristband to keep yourself earthed.

I have always used the bare pipe method of removing static theres something about playing inside the PC with it plugged in to the mains i find a bit worrying.

Thanks both I followed RichieP's advice I put a piece of bare fuse wire around my wrist and earthed it to the Radiator. Up and running now with 384 mb of memory. A local engineer offered to fit it for me for £35 !!!. Thanks again for your help

I understand, but if the socket is switched off, then there's no reason that playing around inside PCs should be a problem when they're plugged in.

Quite right Rob, Just an added safeguard I suppose to earth yourself to a Radiator just incase you pull out the Plug in error
