dvd drive doesnt work ?

hi there i have a sony dvd rw drive, for some reason its not working anymore. if i put say a dvd movie in the drive the orange light comes on for a while, then it goes off. but when i open my computer and see all my different drives in there, and if i hover over my dvd drive it says nothing is there. also if i right clik it and go down to properties, it says it is empty. ive also tried burning different things over the last few weeks, and its doing my head in, because of the drive.
any ideas all help is appreciated. by the way its a sony dvd-rw dw-u14a

since i posted a few days ago, ive tried various things. the last thing ive just tried is i went to device manager and uninstalled my drive. i rebooted and i thought i would have the new hardware wizard come up to find it, and install it again, but it didnt. i went to my computer and it was allready there. anyway i put a dvd in the drive and the orange light comes on again. and basically the drive doesnt read any disk in it. please help im stuck on this one.

You've tried the normal method (delete and re-install) so I normally go for one of those CDs you can buy for cleaning the laser lens. If that doesn't work then as they are so cheap these days I would be looking to swap it out with something like this.
