add hardware

I have a cd from the manufacturer of a mass storage device which i run first, before plugging in the device. When the wizard comes up i get the message 'hardware not installed because wizard cannot find the necessary software. I have also gone into the add/remove hardware in the control panel and get the same message. On going into the trouble shooting i get the yellow ?
but it still cannot find the drivers. I tried re-booting with the device plugged in - I then get the message 'no bootable partition in table' so i have to switch the pc off and disconnect the device. has anyone any ideas as to what is wrong? its not just the one device it is a few new ones that i am trying to add.

Re: add hardware

Are they removable hard drives connected via USB?

Re: add hardware

Yes i am trying to plug them into the usb ports i have tried all of them.
My pc pings when i plug them in but i do not get the balloon that says detected new hardware.
I have been into the bias and my ports are on usb2 - it seems as though the hardware wizard is not doing its job!!!!
Thanks for replying

Re: add hardware

You shouldn't need to install drivers for removable hard drives.

Have you looked in My Computer to see if it's there?

If it's not, try Disk Management in the Computer Management Console:

Right-click My Computer > Manage.

Click Disk Management and look in the right pane for unallocated drives. Right-click if it's there and initialize and format the drive.

Re: add hardware

I went into disk management - it listed usb disk 1-4 and on all of them it said No Media
partition style - not applicable , it did not have a right hand pane for unallocated files.
I plugged a storage device in to see if it anything changed but it did not.
Thanks for offering to help

Re: add hardware

Yes i tried the storage device on another pc and it worked straight away.
I have a camera and camcorder that have worked fine for 2 years in all 6 usb ports that i have and they are still working ok . The new devices have only been bought in the last 3 months I have also tried them in all ports. The only difference is I used to have BT broadband and I now have Sky broadband. I unplugged the ethernet cable from the sky router but it didnt make any difference.
Thanks for replying.

Re: add hardware

The ethernet won't make any difference.

This seems to be one of those strange things that happen with USB sometimes. It seems like your computer has lost any association with that device, the drivers becoming corrupted.

The only way I've seen this overcome is by deleting all USB connections in Device Manager and rebooting.

Re: add hardware

Disconnect all devices on USB.

Uninstall the software that came with the removable drive.

Right-click My Computer > properties.

Click the Hardware tab > Device Manager.

Scroll down to USB at the bottom and click the + to expand them all.

Right-click on each one and select Uninstall, then confirm.

When they are all gobe restart your computer. Be patient and let it find and reinstall all USB ports.

Then try the removable hard drive again.

Re: add hardware

Hi!,
I looked in device manager what i saw was-
usb mass storage device
usb printing support
usb root hub
usb root hub
usb root hub
usb root hub
usb root hub
via rev 5 or later usb universal host controller
via rev 5 or later usb universal host controller
via rev 5 or later usb universal host controller
via rev 5 or later usb universal host controller
via usb enhanced host controller
Which ones do i need to uninstall?

altogether on my pc i have 6 usb ports
one used for my printer and one used for my scanner - which leaves 4.
Do i need to uninstall my printer and scanner software and my olympus camera and my pinnacle camcorder software, or is it just the 3 that i am now trying to connect?
Sorry to be hard work but i am a novice but trying hard to learn.
Thanks

Re: add hardware

The problem is that you don't know which USB port listed in Device Manager relates to which you can see.

Remove them all and reboot.

The computer will reinstall the drivers for your printer etc when you reconnect them.
