Another slow computer

Over the past 5 days my computer has slowed down noticeably especially when i click on links, what used to take seconds can now be a minute or more. I've been working through the trouble shooting guide by John Mckenna and applying the tips where I feel confident enough to do so.
Looking at the events viewer log in the application log there is only one recently with the ID 1000, and in the system log scores of instances of ID 10010, and a few ID 7000. However I'm not very confident of correctly interpreting these results.
Also my RAM size is 256mb which would appear to half what I need for XP pro SP2.
Can anyone offer an opinion on these early results and advise where I go from here? Thanks.

Re: Another slow computer

First off upgrade your RAM, as you pointed out it's too low, then come back to us with a speed update.

Re: Another slow computer

I have today had the CRUCIAL site scan my computer and they say that according to their scan my system already has the max amount of memory installed. Anyone any thoughts?

You must have a very old PC if it's maximum amount of ram is 256mb. Can you give us make and model number please.

Re: Another slow computer

Thanks for the last reply but it looks like I've maybe misread the symptoms.Today I downloaded and ran Advanced WindowsCare v2 Personal and following its scan removed various "nasties" from my computer. I'm now back up and running as per normal. I had run CCLEANER when my problem first started but it would seem it missed whatever was causing my problem .Thanks for the help.

ROCKYHILL , if you mean by "nasties"........ , adware , spyware or viruses , then it's no surprise CCLEANER missed them......it's not designed to detect them.

Which antivirus and antispyware progs do you use ??

Yep , sufficient . although maybe every once in a while . an.... Online scan....isn't a bad idea.
