Start up menu

Can someone please tell me how to clean it up? Too many programmes on it and I don't know how to cut it down.

Windows XP ??
Hover mouse over an entry, right click and then in the dialogue that opens, click on either "remove from list" or "delete"
That only removes the entry from the list, to get rid of any programs, go through the normal uninstall procedure

Just in case you mean StartUp folder as opposed to bungler’s reply for the Start menu :-
1. Download Startups.exe from here http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php and run it.
2. Now go to Start > Run, type msconfig and press Enter. Go to the StartUp Tab and untick those programs you don’t want to run when you start up the computer, making sure they don‘t appear in StartUps as essential (identified with a Y in the leftmost column). When you’ve finished ‘unticking’, close msconfig and let the computer reboot. You will get a reminder that you’re running Selective Startup, just tick ’Don’t show this again’ or similar wording.

Will that startup program work with vista? My Dad has it and can't find out how to remove programs and it is soooooooo slow!

I suggest you reread my post :-
StartUps does not remove programs. It identifies whether a program can be removed from the start up routine or not. It doesn't run slowly, it does take a few seconds to initialise.
If you want to prevent programs from starting, remove them using msconfig.
If you want to remove programs from your system, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
It runs in 98, XP, Server 2003, Vista and Server 2008.

Thanks Burr. Maybe my reply was a bit ambiguous!!! Yeah I should have said remove them from the startup menu... I'll give that a try next time I'm there, but I've never messed about with the msconfig....
I see loads of stuff you can do with msconfig in the magazine, but i suppose I'm worried about getting it wrong. Once I change one thing, I'll be wanting to change everything, then God knows what I'll do to my pc! I suppose It's like anything though, follow the instructions & I'll get there.

If you accidentally remove a program from starting, simply put the tick back.
However, for obvious reasons, don't untick items that reference essential hardware like the keyboard or mouse. Just carefully go through the list to determine what can be removed from starting.
