Hi All Our laptop hardly gets used now but I turned it on tonight mainly to update AVG and instead of booting up it says "error please check date and time" and then appears to be waiting for a password ? which we have never had. It does the same if I try to go into BIOS (F1) or use the only other option which is select boot (F12). I thought maybe the CMOS battery may have gone flat but I thought it would still load a default BIOS with this flat. I do have an identical one for spares but has anyone any ideas before I start meddling It is/was running XP pro Many thanks Pete |

I would say it is the CMOS battery. A pal of mine had similar symptoms on a PC and a new battery cured the problem. Only difference is the battery on a laptop is not as easily changed as in a PC. |

Could it be that in the past you have had the maximum number of abortive attempts at a password and are now locked out? There can be up to three different level passwords on an IBM (Lenovo) laptop or there certainly used to be. Download/have a look at the hardware manual, which should describe the procedure for resetting passwords, here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4UYM3F |
