<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Hi, Im new here and not very technically minded so any help would be appreciated
My computer crashed and is displaying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
please reinstall a copy of the above file" It is also making a continuous clicking noise
Having read pervious posts and other stuff on the net I tried different keyboards, both the pin types and USB kinds but nothing.
I have the XP disk but it doesn't give me the option to do anything with it, I cant access safe mode and Im not really sure what to do so any help or ideas would be great.
Thanks Vondalin

If you have the XP disc try booting from that. (You may have to change the BIOS boot sequence).
Boot from the disc and let Windows set up. Then select the first R for Recovery Console.
Type in Administrator password or press Enter.
When the command prompt appears type in chkdsk /f/r (note the space) and press enter.

That is normally a sign that your hard disk has got a terminal illness. Do you have backups of your important data?

G'day vondalin.

ntoskrnl.exe is easy to fix.
The sound is it just clicking or is it more of a knocking sound?.
