Hi I have just bought a 2nd hand pc from a shop. It had a version of AVG installed that i didn't want, so i uninstalled it! Not all of the programme uninstalled as when i went to 'add/remove' programmes, some of it was still there. I click 'remove' & it says the following:- "Installer initialisation failed due to following error" Error: Initialisation of the language file "C:\ProgrammeFiles\Grisoft\AVG7" Failed General Failiure. I've tried to install AVG again but it keeps failing when my dial-up connection fails. (i have to have dial-up here at the moment). It won't carry on the download from where it leaft off! So, i went to my old pc, went to programme files>Grisoft>AVG Free & copied all the files onto a USB stick. Is it possible to put AVG on my new pc via my USB stick & will it overwrite the problem above! Any help appreciated Gaz |

You can copy the file to a USB stick and install it. That should resolve your problem. |

Could you explain how i do this! I have a folder on my usb stick that i named avg. When i open it i have all the files icons that i guess are used to install AVG. How do i get that to open as the programme?? Thanks Gaz |

There should only be one file to copy across, the original setup.exe you downloaded to install AVG. If you haven't got that, download it again and copy that across. |

Where can i find this 'setup.exe' file? It isn't in Programmefiles>Grisoft>Avg7 All i have on my stick what i copied seem not to open & are just the icon in Avg7! I just want to transfer the AVG Free on my old pc, to this pc, without downloading it from a site! Can you give me instructions on how to please!? I'd be grateful Gaz |

You can't simply copy a programme from one PC to another. You must install it properly, if necessary by downloading it again from Grisoft. |

That is seeming difficult as i am currently on dial-up & it takes nearly 1 & half hrs to download AVG 7.5 & i always get knocked offline & the download seems not to start from where it leaft off when downloading from filehippo or majorgeeks. On my old pc, same operator system, same dialup, whenever i got knocked offline, i could restart download from where leaft off! Is there something i can do to prevent this? Although i notice that the speed is 48.0 kbps & i think it was more like 56 kbps on my old pc! Why is this & what can i do! Thanks |

First of all Quote:why is this happening? What error message are you getting? There is a software available that will solve the problem of picking up a dropped download link but lets find out why it's happening first. Second a dial up speed of 56kb is not possible. That may have been the indicated speed but it wasn't being measured properly. 48kb is a perfectly acceptable speed for a dial-ip connection. |

Hi greysts whatever i do, i notice it more when downloading, if the 2 little monitor icons in taskbar are illuminated, they will stop, dissapear & i get the dial-up connection box for orangeanytime. If i download an mpeg media clip & mid-download my connection fails, it does carry on from where it leaft off, but with programmes like i'm downloading on filehippo, they don't! The new pc (new to me) has a different modem i think to the one in this, as that pc says 'orangeanytime connected 48kbps) This one says 52kbps & seems a stronger connection. This is why i've downloaded Spybot & AVG setup files to my usb stick & i'm going to transfer them over to my new pc! The new pc just kept going offline. The guy at the shop i bought the pc from says that ISP are deliberately knocking people offline to get them to sign up for broadband! This i'm unsure of! One question if i may! I want to uninstall Spybot of my pc! It's not in 'add/remove programmes', it's not in start>all programmes, but it is in c:\>programmeFiles>SpybotSearch & Destroy. Can i just delete that file in Programme files to remove the programme. Many thanks |

You might want to try this for your downloads. It will remember how far a download has progressed and pick it up again from the point at which it broke down. Quote:A good story but complete rubbish. However several ISPs have said that they will no longer provide dial up services because broadband is so cheap. Which brings me to the point, why are you still using dial up? Go to Start, All Programs, Spybot S&D. There you will find the uninstall process for that programme. |

Thanks. Spybot sorted & succesfully moved from my USB stick to new pc! I downloaded AVG 7.5.446 from filehippo & put the setup file onto my USB stick. I downloaded this version as i had it on my other pc & liked it. I copied it to my desktop, double clicked & it said 'Expired installation Package'. Some one said it's a .bin file priority update for March 2007 size 6.2MB, but it clearly says in filehippo, 18.84MB?!? Does this mean i can't use it & must download the latest version. It worked ok on my other pc! Why does filehippo have the old versions of anti virus's if they can't be used! I have something to do with AVG in 'add/remove programmes', it's 7.04MB & i can't uninstall it! it says:- Installation failed (this is when i click on add/remove) Installer initialization failed due to following error: Error: Initialization of the language file "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7" failed. General failure. Could this be the reason my version isn't installing? I will have broadband soon! Many thanks Gaz |

Why are you wasting time downloading stuff from Filehippo? The programme was designed and created by Grisoft so they are the right people from whom to get it. Click on this link to download the file direct from Grisoft. The file is 29mb so whatever other files you got certainly are not the correct ones. |

I just don't know why i can't use my old version that i like. I use Windows Media Player 6.4 classic from F/hippo, Mailwasher 2.0 from there & also Spybot version 1.3 from there! New isn't always best! I don't understand about filehippo, why if the older versions are on offer, can't they be downloaded & used? Why are they on there if they can't be used? Is the 'Expired installation package' meaning i can't use the version i want & if so, why is it on the filehippo? along with many earlier versions? Thanks |

I have no idea. You'll have to ask the people running File Hippo. Out of date Anti Virus programmes are worse than useless. They don't protect a PC properly, that's why they get updated. If you want to use outdated software, feel free but don't be surprised when they don't work properly or offer any protection to your PC. |

G'day gizmax. Spybot v1.3 will not update. spybot_v1.5.1.17_beta_1 is the latest version, which I am testing. As greysts writes old out dated protection is usless and a lot of older players have many backdoor entry points. |

Ok i think i get it now! If i open Spybot 1.3 & click on 'search for updates' & i download them, those updates won't be as up to date as updates on version 1.5.!! The same with AVG. A quick other thing!, i accidentaly disabled my Internet Explorer by using 'add/remove programmes' & 'add/remove Windows components'. The icon is no longer on my desktop although in C:\>programmeFiles, IE is still there, minus 1 file (the one with the IE logo). I know this because on this pc, my old one, that file (the logo) is visible, & on the pc i'm talking about, it isn't! IE does appear when certain links only open with IE, but i can't manualy open it as there is no icon. It also isn't in start>allProgrammes!. A friend said to go to run & type in 'sfc /scannow' i typed this in but went no further as i didn't realy know what i was doing, but it has leaft a lot of files in the ProgrammeFiles folder. Can i safely delete these! Thanks Is it ok to delete IE in programmeFiles & re download it again |

Quote: G'day gazmix. Using Spybot 1.3 you will not even get any updates, it's discontinued. You need to install v1.4.0.3 - the version I am using is Beta (v1.5). Old AVG if run might update with a newer version, depending how old the old version is. To get IE working again you need the XP setup disk or find a DVD/CD with IE 6 or IE 7 and install it. |

Sandhound, i'm confused! I just opend spybot1.3 & clicked on search for updates & it found:- dialers, hackers, malware,PUPS,spybots, trojans & up to date detections!! & i installed the updates & got the large green ticks in each box!! I don't get it! I've used this for ages. Anyone have advice about the files in c:\.programmeFiles that appeared after i opened sfc /scannow. It asked for a cd & as i didn't know much about it, i turned pc off & got loads of files appear in the above area! , below the folders in ProgrammeFiles. Thanks |
