DVD +R RW appears blank

Guys, I am confused. I have a laptop running XP and a PC running Vista Home Premium. Both have a DVD rewriter.

Using the laptop I have copied photo's onto a DVD +R RW which I add to frequently. Each time I insert the DVD all the photo's are displayed and I can add to the DVD without a problem.

When I insert the DVD in the PC drive it appears to be blank. Windows asks me what I wish to do with the new disk!

The only differences are the operating systems and the DVD drive in the PC is a DVD +R RW DL (Dual Layer?).

Should the two be compatible?

Would be great to hear from the experts if anyone has any knowledge.

Thanks in advance.

Andy.

Your statement above, are you using R or RW disks?

There should be no incompatibilities between the two drives, i.e. the one reading the data being dual-layer. What software are you using in XP to burn the images?

Have you tried putting a few images on a CD-R and checking if they can be read?

I’m not very optimistic but try uninstalling the drive in Device Manager and let Windows reinstall it.

Equally pessimistically, try deleting the lower and/or upper filters as per here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us

Re: DVD +R RW appears blank

The disks I am using are Memorex DVD+R but also have the "RW" logo on them! So does this make them +R or +RW? As far as software goes I just use the Windows camera wizard which opens when I attach my camera and drag the pictures to the disk..

If they were RWs you would have to format them first and, in any case, WinXP does not support burning to DVD, it has to be done by a third-party software supplier.

Do you drag them to hard disk or DVD disk?

Have you tried any of the other things I suggested?

As a further test you could try burning a few images in Vista, which does support DVD burning, and check if the XP PC can read them.

Re: DVD +R RW appears blank

I am going to try the things you have suggested. I am at work at the moment and due to a horrible shift pattern my time with the computers are limited at the moment.. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks for your advice it is much appreciated..

Re: DVD +R RW appears blank

Confused? I will be! I have created another disk in exactly the same manner. ie I have attached camera to laptop (XP). The windows scanner/camera wizard has asked me what I want to do. I have copied the pics to a folder on the desktop. I have then inserted a new DVD +R and a program called "Sonic LE" has asked me if I want to format the disk. I obviously did so I did! I have then dragged my pics from the desktop folder directly onto the disk. All copied fine. Exactly the procedure I have done before. I have used a disk from exactly the same pack. I have put the disk in my Vista PC and it has opened without a problem! The first disk however will not. Although it opens perfectly OK on the laptop each time I put it in the Vista PC drive the PC thinks it's a new blank disk? So.. I don't now have a problem but would like to get to the bottom of this!

I'm glad it is 'apparently' working correctly.

I won't mention that R disks don't need formatting, perhaps it's terminology used by the Sonic LE program.

G'day warspite.

I have read problems about Memorex. If I remember, it was to do with the dye type used.

Re: DVD +R RW appears blank

I had the same problem with my laptop and bought an external re-writer.
I removed the drive as mentioned on here but need to know how to get the drive back via windows.
How do I do this please.

Re: DVD +R RW appears blank

Confusion continues! I have now had a little more time at home to play with these disks etc.. Although the last disk I did was read by my PC/Vista it now isn't! Each time I put the disk in the PC/Vista it asks me if I wish to format the blank disk... the disks clearly say in large capitals "DVD+R" although they are also marked with the "RW" logo! Perhaps it is the disks and not the Sonic (Dell) software? If I out the disks in the laptop/XP they open straight away through "My Computer" and I am able to view the photo's. I am going to get some new disks in case as previously mentioned there are problems with "Memorex". I am a little confused as to whether I should get "R" or "RW" disks and whether they should be "+" or "-"!!
