Winamp

Hi,

Just read "The sound of music" article in the current issue of Web-user and I am interested in Winamp. Has anyone tried it?
I currently use WMP 9 to play my music files, but I'm not that impressed with the sound quality.

Also, does anyone know if is spyware free?

cheers

Re: Winamp

i don't use anything else, winamp sounds 10 times better, and it is spyware free, it has a 10 band graphic equaliser. i have it as my default player for all music files. there are plenty of skins for it to make it look jazzy if you want.
if i had known i would live this long, i would have taken better care of myself.

Re: Winamp

WinAmp is the best by a long way in my opinion. It rocks. There are loads of skins available and my favourite is the MMD3 skin.

I would strongly urge you to get WinAmp 3. You will discover loads of features including top quality digital radio.

Oh yes!!!

Many thanks for your quick replies, this is sounding sooo much better now!

I wasn't very impressed with the sound at first and then I had a fiddle with the graphic equalizer... That's more like it!!

OOOOOH, that's pretty!

Just downloaded the MMD3 skin Jonny555 and have gone for the old "juicy|blue" colour scheme.... Nice...

1st impressions of this player are very good, a nice quick download and the sound quality is just so much better than wmp.

Re: Winamp

So glad you like it. I've got juicy|blue as my skin too. The WinAmp website is really worth exploring aswell. Theres even tools and tutorials for creating your own skins. I've done this in the past and it's very satisfying.

The live radio stations have got a great range of music covering all tastes.

Have fun.

Re: Winamp

ah must agree and disagree with webuser

Winamp is a brilliant mp3 program
small , compact, skinnable and doesnt eat up space

winamp 3is the better option
but winamp 2 has features that 3 doesnt

i use em both

Re: Winamp

Most people agree that 2.91 is better than 3 & a lot of people find it more stable. Just worth a mention for anyone who encounters any problems with stability or hogging resources. Personally I prefer Quintessential.

Re: Winamp

It does improve the sound, but it depends on how good your speakers are. If you've got poor quality speakers then it won't make much of a difference.

Play with it until your satisfied with the sound.

Re: Winamp

I agree with Homer, QCD Player is brilliant!. I am quite sure that not alot of people know about this, but I think it should of got a mention in the Music Player Software section of the magazine, you should check it out, I myself find it better than Winamp; it's also got some brilliant skins, including this popular one you've been mentioning!

Check it! Quinnware

Re: Winamp

Hi Ann,

With Winamp, click the EQ button to open the equalizer, then click Presets>Load>Presets>Classical.

This will (supposedly) setup the equalizer for that style of music, although I often find some of the other available presets offer a better sound. It's just a matter of adjusting the sliders to increase/reduce particular frequencies. As Jonny555 has intimated trial and error is the order of the day (as with most equalisers).

Personally I have my computer sound fed through an external system so I tend to leave the Winamp equaliser off and make adjustements via the Hi-Fi (do people still say Hi-Fi?).

I can remember when people used to love boasting about their High Fidelity sound system. Seems along time ago now.

Re: Winamp

I also like Winamp 2, mainly because I got the plugin for converting midi to wave, so I can get them to mp3 output. I prefer my own card's player generally though, as it is compact and light on resources, but plays all the music/vids WMP uses.
