My DVDs won't work

I've been locked into Region 1 playback only by both latest version of Windows Media player (on XP Professional) & also by RealOne Player. Plain stupid & or unlucky?
How do I get to play my multiregion DVDs without this lockout? Is there a free download?
I also have a particular R2 DVD that played on a friends laptop & PC but not on mine. Any suggestions - I've already sent one copy back to supplier!
