What's an IDX File?

Having just started to use Kazaa Lite I downloaded my first track and saved it to my My Documents My Music folder. When I opened that folder I found it contained hundreds of files, all with a .idx extension e.g. Ca01.idx. When I looked at their properties I found they were all 32bytes in size and created at the same time (roughly) on the same date on 23rd June. When I try to open one I am faced with "Open With" or "File Download" dialogues. Neither seem to work. Any ideas what these are? Do they serve any purpose or can they safely be deleted?

Re: What's an IDX File?

Having done a search on Google it seems an application called LaTeX creates these .idx files. So unless you have LaTeX installed you won't be able to use them. I'll try to find a little more info on LaTeX.

Have a look at this site. Explains all you'll need to know. http://www.latex-project.org/

Re: What's an IDX File?

Did a search of my HD and couldn't find anything. My wife might be into latex but not me! I await (with great deal of interest!!) your findings.

Re: What's an IDX File?

Having read it, I'm none the wiser. Never heard of/seen it before. So h7ow did all the files get into My Music folder? Incidentally, the file symbol against each file is the Windows logo, so could these be Index files - but to what? Do you think I could delete them?

Re: What's an IDX File?

IDX extensions have traditionally been associated with indeces, i.e. a way of sequencing a database (file) in a number of different ways.

Mutltiple indeces suggest that it is part of a largish application package processing a largish database.

Although I don't recognise the filename perhaps you could examine all files with the same (or very similar) name/date and put 2 and 2 together.

Don't delete them until you know what they are.

Re: What's an IDX File?

if it was only an mp3 you d/loaded, i personally would delete the whole lot and re/download the mp3 from a different user on kazaa-lite.
if i had known i would live this long, i would have taken better care of myself.

Re: What's an IDX File?

Found this on another Forum via MSN Search. Seems as though this has happened to someone else but unfortunately there is no conclusion. I'm not happy with reference to Kazaalite and a trojan but snce I only downloaded Kazaalite last Friday I don't see how files were created on June 23rd!? There is another file in the folder created at same time on same date called Tdbxidl.dat.

.IDX files?
I have literally thousands upon thousands of these files, all <1kb, all created on the same date within the same minute, with a few .dat files in between:

ca56.idx
cdbidxl.idx
chf5.idx
ct54.idx
necdb.dat

and so on...

further investigation of files modified or created on that date shows that I was on grokster, as the adcache showed up as being modified 10 minutes later. 2 files were modified 3 minutes before all of these files were created: (cookies from the internet) : jknight@ads.cdnow[1].txt & jknight@cdnow[1].txt

What in the world did this?

the only thing I can possibly think of that might do that is grokster, but it's never done it before, and besides, there aren't any media files on the D:\ drive, which is where these files are at...completely bizarre...don't want to just delete the files, b/c they may be important to some screwy program sometime down the road...

Grokster might have some other programs running within it ...many of the P2P client programs nowadays have SpyWare/AdWare and who knows what else. It was either Grokster or KaZaA that even had a trojan many people downloaded unawares.

I suggest you use a "clean client"...look for a "cleaned" version of Grokster. I use KaZaA Lite myself.

KaZaa wouldn't work for me for some reason, that's why I switched to Grokster..."

The plot thickens!!!
