real player

On my task bar at bottom of screen i keep getting a small blue icon flashing and asking me to update my real player,, When ever i click on it shows a program to download, but with no reference it belongs to Microsoft, As a beginner i want to know if this is a legit site and safe to down load without costing me money

Is this the site your going to? Your copy of RealPlayer is probably old and it's set up to check for updates. It would be safe to update if you really want to.

As far as I know Real Player is not a Microsoft product, the prompt is possibly RP wanting you to go for the pay for version with more additional features.
Some time ago I installed RP because it was/is the preferred program of the BBC website. Unfortunately I found RP to be very intrusive, even advised, rightly or wrongly, it monitored internet preferences. In other words, spyware.
To me the program became a total nuisance, forever prompting etc so I was quite happy to uninstall.

Real Player is perfectly legit, though not connected with Micro$oft as far as I know. It's used for playing Real Media sound and video files.
I believe people have had bad experiences with the latest version, called Real One or something. I stick with the slightly older Real Player 8 for those odd occasions when I need it.
Real Player can be a real pain. Try opening it when Windows Media Player's open and it will crash. If you let it, it will plaster itself all over your computer and be forever checking for updates. Not sure about actual spyware, but I've never trusted it.
It does have it's uses though. Just make sure all the preset options they want you to leave untouched are disabled so that it can only do what you want it to do, which is to play Real Media files, and you shouldn't have too many problems.

many thanks to everyone that kindly replied regarding "Real Player" i must be honest all your comments have helped me to make up my mind regarding that program, and taking everything into account i think i am going to give it a big miss, just seems not worth the hassel, so once again many thanks .
