CD Burners - Worth the Cash?

Guys and Gals
I've read the comments in previous posts regarding Nero, Roxio etc. I've been using the demo version of nero for the past month and have been impressed so far.
My question is are they really worth splashing the cash on, or are there free alternatives which are just as good?
It's not the cost thats the problem, but I've become so used to downloading free firewalls, anti-virus, media players etc it's a bit of a novelty to have to put my hand in my pocket!

If you're on Windows XP there is no need to splash out as XP includes a Lite version of Roxio EasyCD Creator 4
Otherwise, yes it is worth it. However, I'd be very surprised if you didn't already have a copy if you have a cd burner. I have yet to find a manufacturer who didn't supply either Nero or Roxio with the hardware

Thanks for the reply puta.
I did have an adaptec burner installed but things went wrong well over a year ago.
I'm using windows me and the trouble started (I think) when I updated WMP to version 7. After I had updated, something seemed to either overwrite or delete some of the files the burner needed to work? I kept getting error messages saying it couldnt find certain files and I couldnt find them through searching explorer.
There were also no system restore points so I've been using WMP and realplayer ever since, but havent really got on with either.

it's the story of life, you get what you pay for , personaly, i find the free burners just as good as the paid for ones, once the disc is burnt it sounds exactly the same.
if i had known i would live this long, i would have taken better care of myself.

I've got a better idea:
Go to Son Of Spy at:
www.sover.net/~whoi/Index.html
and look at his list of multimedias sites.
There you will find a link to CD Extreme (Which is a Sony programme) and it is absolutely free...I use it as sometimes I get mad with Nero...I am one of the few that cannot get on with it.
Son Of Spy's website is great for good freeware.

This is one of the best freeware sites..you will find lots of good stuff.
Can I also recommend you go to valuable Newsgroups such as :
alt.music.mp3
and alt.comp.freeware
I find endless information on Newsgroups about Music downloads, burning etc.
