no sound

Hi guys. Another problem I'm afraid. I have somehow managed to lose all my sound. I know it is probably a problem with my drivers or sound card but how do I go about finding out and fixing the problem? I am not at all sure what type of sound card or what drivers I have. Any help would be appreciated as I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms as I can't listen to any of my mp3's!! For your info I am running Windows 98 and have a PIII 700.

Many thanks

Re: no sound

While we're waiting for the experts, Jane, check that you haven't muted your sound anywhere. Left click on the little speaker icon on the taskbar and make sure there isn't a tick in the "mute" box. Also, open Media player and check that the speaker symbol here has the little lines radiating out from it, or if not, click on it to bring them back.

All basic stuff, I know, but it's always worth checking the obvious before looking at drivers and things like that.

Re: no sound

Barney,

Thought I would try your suggestion, however there is no speaker icon in my taskbar (mysteriously disappeared). I use MusicMatch Jukebox and when I try to play an mp3, I get the message 'Waveout format not supported'.

Any suggestions?

Re: no sound

Hi Jane

Try this.

Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices and put a tick in the box 'Place volume icon in the taskbar'. Once you get the speaker icon in the task bar, Right click on it and choose 'Open Volume Control'. Check all the boxes to make sure that none of them are muted.

Re: no sound

Also, Windows Media Player seems able to handle just about any audio format apart from Real Media files. I use it for my collection of MP3, wav and wma files. Have you checked your associations? (Open Media Player, go to Tools, Options, File Types.)

Re: no sound

In Win98 Volume Control is under Start, Settings, Control Panel, Multimedia but I'm not convinced that's your problem.

Does the sound card show in Device Mgr, i.e. right click My Computer?

Re: no sound

Hi Guys,

Just got home so I thought I would try out suggestions and send a message with my findings:

Greysts - there is no Sounds and Audio icon in my control panel, maybe your in another version of Windows.

Barney - I don't really like WMP and rarely use it. I keep it as a failsafe in case anything happens to my MusicMatch. I have about 10gb of mp3's on my hard drive so I prefer using a Jukebox like MusicMatch to sort, play and record them. However, today I tried to use my WMP, it opened but would not play any mp3's even after I made it the default player. It then got stuck and I had to reboot to get rid of it!

BurrWalnut - Did as you suggested and went into the Multimeadia icon in the control panel. The show volume control is greyed out so unable to use it. I right clicked on My Computer and went into System Information. I use Norton Utilities 2002 so that provided the information on my system. Could not find any info on my sound card anywhere.

More info in general guys. Since Monday I have noticed on booting up a grey box saying 'New Hardware found'. Apparently I have installed a PCI Multimedia Audio Device, however I have no recollection of this so I have been ignoring it. Maybe I have been abducted by aliens and my memory swiped! Who knows, but something weird is going on.

Re: no sound

Ok So it seems that your sound card driver has gone for walkabouts, if you don't know which sound card you have, see if Windows can find it for you.

Re: no sound

Iain,

Thanks your message. How do I go about finding which sound card I have and finding a driver for it? I am not sure where to look or what to do.

Re: no sound

Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Device Manager tab
Click the + sign to the left of Sounds, Video and Game controllers
It should list various devices there
If you can post back what you find there, we should be able to identify it for you

Re: no sound

Nothing with an exclamation mark by it?

Is this a PCI soundcard or an on board soundcard

If it is a PCI card, have you been inside your PC recently, and if yes did you disturb the card?

Re: no sound

Iain,

There is nothing with a exclamation mark by the side, only the 3 items listed as per my previous message.

I have never been inside my PC, I wouldn't recognise one part from the other if it was opened up in front of me. Neither has it been moved recently.

Also, what exactly is the difference between PCI and on board soundcards? I really know very little about soundcards and feel as if I am not giving you much help.

Re: no sound

Are there anything at all showing an exclamation mark in Device manager?

At the back of your computer, where the speaker wires plug in, is it near your mouse and keyboard or is it further down your computer?

Re: no sound

I have looked through all the devices under Device Manager, and none have an exclamation mark against them

I have had a look at the back of my PC. The three ports that deal with the speakers and the microphone are directly under the port for the monitor. The ports for the mouse and keyboard are right at the top. I hope this helps

Re: no sound

Just to add some more info to my problem. I bought my computer from Time and was given a cd with the drivers. This week I have tried to install the sound drivers on the cd but none of them seem to work. I have opened up my computer and it looks as if I does not have a separate sound card. I have a yellow box attached to my motherboard with no markings on it whatsoever. I have a Gigabyte motherboard GA-6WMMC7. I have been to the Gigabyte website and downloaded the Audio Driver for that motherboard. However, again no joy. I am really at a loss as to what to do, can anyone suggest anything?

Re: no sound

So you downloaded the Aureal driver from here

And you double clicked on it when you've downloaded it?

Hmm!
